# The ANC says while it notes the growing public discourse surrounding broad-based black economic empowerment policies, the laws are necessary to push transformation. A DA policy document has called for what it says are the destructive ANC policies, like BEE and land expropriation, to be removed. The party says analysis from 2023 and last year showed the policies were doing good for black South Africans, with around 112-billion-rand being invested in black businesses. It adds those who benefit from BEE should come out to defend it.
# The DA has condemned Operation Dudula’s hindering and intimidation of foreign nationals seeking healthcare, particularly in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal. The group claims the country’s healthcare system is overburdened by undocumented foreign nationals. The DA’s Karl le Roux says they have asked acting Police minister Firoz Cachalia for the deployment of public order police at facilities where Operation Dudula is blocking access to individuals’ constitutional right to access to healthcare:
# Tshwane mayor Nasiphi Moya has vowed to comply with a court judgment ordering the metro to fix the Tshwane fresh produce market and provide it with municipal services. The Gauteng High Court found the metro had failed to comply with a court order handed down in October 2022, relating to Tshwane’s responsibility to maintain and upgrade the market. The mayor’s spokesperson, Samkelo Mgobozi, says the market is one of the metro’s most valuable strategic assets:

# The White House has described president Donald Trump’s meeting with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, in Alaska on Friday as a listening session. Russia has indicated it was prepared to consider a ceasefire with Ukraine in exchange for Kyiv withdrawing from the parts of Donbas it still controlls. Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky has rejected this. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt says Trump will head into the meeting both hopeful and measured:
# Soccer: England’s governing body banned former Premier League referee David Coote for eight weeks over comments he made about former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp last year. A video on the issue was circulated widely. Coote says he thought he was speaking privately when he made the comments, but acknowledged they were crass and inappropriate. He was earlier dismissed by the Premier League, while European governing body UEFA banned him from officiating until July next year.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-55-cents and the euro at 20-rand-52-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-73-cents and Bitcoin trades at 119-thousand-445-dollars. Gold sells at three-thousand-357-dollars-8-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 65-dollars-77-cents a barrel.
