# Seven people are shot dead in Bishop Lavis in Cape Town
# The FF Plus says poisonous spaza food underpins problems in the fast food industry
# And, Venezuela is furious with Brazil over the BRICS veto
# Western Cape police have launched a manhunt for a suspect following the murder of seven people in Bishop Lavis, Cape Town, last night. Police spokesperson, Andrè Traut says at approximately 20 to 9 last night an armed suspect entered an informal dwelling in Kogelberg Street and fired several shots at the occupants. He says six people died on the scene and another later in hospital, while two people were wounded:
# The Freedom Front Plus says the recent deaths and hospitalisation of a large number of children who presumably ingested poisonous food from spaza shops and street vendors are indicative of how poorly existing laws and by-laws are being enforced and policed. The FF Plus’s Philip van Staden says municipal law enforcement should be reinforced with support from the provincial and national governments, while the policing of such informal food outlets should immediately be intensified:
# The Patriotic Alliance made significant gains in a by-election in the George municipality. The party doubled its support since the 2021 local government elections and retained a key seat in the municipality. The DA retained two wards in the City of Cape Town and Stellenbosch during by-elections. The GOOD Party, meanwhile, filed a complaint with the Electoral Commission against both the PA and the DA. The party claimed, without providing evidence, that representatives of the PA and DA offered voters food parcels and threatened people if they voted for another party.
# Venezuela has criticised Brazil’s decision to veto its admission to the BRICS group of emerging economies. Venezuela’s foreign ministry described the move as an immoral aggression. Relations between the two left-wing governments have worsened since July’s contested presidential election in Venezuela. Russian president Vladimir Putin, who hosted the summit, said Venezuela would only be able to join BRICS if there was consensus among BRICS members. The latest summit was seen as an opportunity for Putin to demonstrate that attempts to isolate Russia over its invasion of Ukraine had failed.
# Soccer: Japan’s governing body says they want to host the women’s World Cup in 2031 to ignite the game domestically. Japan won the cup in 2011, but has since been left behind while the women’s game flourished in Europe. The team lost to the US in the final four years later, and couldn’t go beyond the quarterfinals since. Japan hosted the men’s World Cup together with South Korea in 2002, leading to a huge interest in the sport in the country.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-68-cents and the euro at 19-rand-13-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-93-cents and Bitcoin trades at 67-thousand-577-dollars-86-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-729-dollars-60-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 74-dollars-65-cents a barrel.
