In this bulletin:
# The FF Plus wants Parliament to take action against Mkhwebane over her racial remarks
# A former Israeli prime minister predicts a large-scale attack on Iran’s oil industry
# And rugby: Lusanda Dumke leads the Springbok Women against Australia
# The Freedom Front Plus says the unfounded criticism and racist remarks by former Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane are shockingly inappropriate. Mkhwebane blamed her ongoing struggle against her impeachment on figures predominantly of Indian descent. This comes after the Supreme Court of Appeal dismissed her application to appeal a Western Cape High Court ruling related to her impeachment inquiry. FF Plus’ Heloïse Denner says Mkhwebane’s utterances not only discredit the integrity of the people in question but also Parliament’s processes:
# The Public Service Commission will investigate the appointment of Hawks divisional commissioner Patrick Mbotho amid allegations of misconduct. This includes sending pornographic content on a police WhatsApp group, and ties to suspected underworld figure Nafiz Modack. Hawks head Godfrey Lebeya insists all procedures were followed. The commission’s chairperson, Jan de Villiers, called for integrity from senior position holders:
# The ANC in Tshwane says it is not fazed by the DA’s threats of retaliation if ousted mayor Cilliers Brink is not reinstated. The DA is demanding the ANC reinstates Brink, or face potential no-confidence motions in other ANC-led cities. The ANC’s top seven is expected to report back to party leaders in Tshwane today about fielding a mayoral candidate. The ANC reportedly has two candidates, Tshwane secretary George Matjila and premier Panyaza Lesufi’s chief of staff, Kgoši Maepa. Matjila says they refuse to be threatened by the DA.
# Israel is likely to mount a large-scale airstrike against Iran’s oil industry and possibly a symbolic attack on a military target related to its nuclear programme. This is the view of former Israeli prime minister Ehud Barak. On Tuesday, Iran fired nearly 200 ballistic missiles at Israel, saying it was in retaliation for the killing of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah. Barak says Israel must respond forcefully. Meanwhile, US president Joe Biden says he was discussing possible Israeli strikes on Iranian oil sites in response to Tehran’s missile attack.
# Rugby: Lusanda Dumke will lead the Springbok Women into battle tomorrow when they take on Australia at Athlone Stadium in Cape Town in the second round of the Women’s-15 season 2. Dumke’s elevation into the starting team is amongst a number of changes made by Swys de Bruin and the coaching staff following their 31-24 win over Japan last weekend. De Bruin is expecting a tough match against Australia:
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-45-cents and the euro at 19-rand-26-cents.
