BULLETIN 27 September 11 am
Good morning. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# A call is made for an inquiry into the independence of the National Prosecuting Authority
# Kamala Harris affirms American support for Ukraine
# And rugby, Argentina still has a mathematical chance to clinch the Rugby Championship title
# The Centre for Development and Enterprise is calling on president Cyril Ramaphosa to appoint a retired judge to spearhead an urgent independent inquiry into the National Prosecuting Authority. The inquiry aims to confront underperformance and the devastating effect of state capture, which crippled the prosecuting agency, leaving high-profile corruption cases languishing. The centre’s Ann Bernstein says the disappointing performance of the NPA has led to a pervasive sense of despair that the state cannot enforce the law:
# A gas supply cliff in South Africa would have significant socio-economic and job-loss implications and would threaten key industrial sectors that rely on natural gas and methane-rich gas. This is according to energy expert Chris Yelland. The current main source of supply, two gas fields in Mozambique operated by Sasol, will not supply South African clients from mid-2026. The Industrial Gas Users Association says a gas supply cliff would put approximately 60-thousand direct jobs at risk. Yelland says a restructuring of the gas supply monopoly in the country is needed.
# US vice president Kamala Harris says Ukraine cannot be forced into accepting a peace deal in which it surrenders its sovereign territory and neutrality to make peace with Russian president Vladimir Putin. Harris and president Joe Biden met with Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House, where he presented his victory plan for the war. Harris insists if she were to become president, the US would continue its unwavering support for Ukraine:
# Rugby: Argentinia still has a mathematical chance to clinch the Rugby Championship title when they take on the Springboks in Mbombela in the final round tomorrow. But they need a bonus point victory over the four-time world champions, and deprive South Africa of any log points. Pumas head coach Felipe Contepomi has made seven changes to the team that stunned the Boks in Argentina last week. Among the changes are Santiago Grondona replacing injured flanker Marcos Kremer, and imposing lock Tomas Lavanini returning to the starting team.
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-22-cents and the euro at 19-rand-18-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-5-cents and Bitcoin trades at 65-thousand-324-dollars-19-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-667-dollars-42-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 71-dollars-77-cents a barrel.
# And finally, president Cyril Ramaphosa will today officiate the repatriation and restitution homecoming ceremony of South African freedom fighters who lost their lives in Zambia and Zimbabwe during the apartheid era. The ceremony will take place at the Freedom Park Heritage Site and Museum in Pretoria. The mortal remains of 42 former liberation heroes and heroines arrived in South Africa on Wednesday. Freedom Park CEO, Jane Mufamadi, told the SABC the names of the fighters will be inscribed on the Wall of Names:
