BULLETIN 11 September 11 am
Good morning. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# RISE Mzansi is concerned about the more than a thousand rape cases withdrawn
# The UN says the Ukrainian-Russian war has gone on for far too long
# And rugby: Jake White is excited by the Bulls’ blend of youth and experience
# RISE Mzansi says given the prevalence of rape in South Africa, particularly against women, having one-thousand-416 cases of rape withdrawn due to insufficient evidence is concerning. In the 2023/’24 financial year, nine cases of murder and 18 of hijacking were also withdrawn. RISE Mzansi’s Makashule Gana says there is a need for more detectives to ensure that all credible cases reach their natural conclusion:
# The EFF rejects the recent grants extended by the European Union to South Africa, totalling over 630-million-rand. The grants will support the country’s green hydrogen agenda, including building more renewable energy infrastructure and improving energy efficiency. The EFF says these grants come despite South Africa already being involved in the Just Energy Transition Partnership with international partners. It adds the country’s energy trajectory must not be dictated by foreign powers whose primary concern is their own environmental policies.
# Tshwane mayor Cilliers Brink says while they had budgeted 450-million-rand over three years to fix Rooiwal wastewater works in Hammanskraal, it does not have the 3.2-billion-rand it needs to upgrade its capacity. The plant needs a significant increase in capacity to prevent pollution, and sewage from flowing downstream into the Apies River and the Leeuwkraal Dam. Brink says there is a possibility that they will need a different strategy for the future of the treatment plant, which includes private partnerships.
# The United Nations says the war between Ukraine and Russia has gone on for far too long, causing immense suffering and leaving more than 40-percent of Ukraine’s population in need of humanitarian assistance. The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights reports that since 24 February 2022, over eleven-thousand-700 civilians have been killed. The UN’s Joyce Msuya says they are deeply concerned by the recent expansion of fighting to new areas on both sides of the Ukrainian-Russian border:
# Rugby: Bulls coach Jake White says his team is probably as close as they have ever been to getting the balance right between youth and experience in the squad. They missed out on the United Rugby Championship title last season, losing to Glasgow Warriors. White says he is hoping the experience gained will help his team in the playoff stages of the championship:
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-84-cents and the euro at 19-rand-71-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-35-cents and Bitcoin trades at 56-thousand-530-dollars-95-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-526-dollars-19-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 70-dollars-5-cents a barrel.
