# Cosatu is disappointed in the rugby blackout for most South Africans
# A University of Western Cape taxation lecturer calls for caution on the Two-Pot System
# And, tennis: Jack Draper loses first Grand Slam semi-final to Jannik Sinner at the US Open
# Cosatu is disappointed that the rugby game between the Springboks and New Zealand will not be shown to all South Africans today. Cosatu’s Malvern De Bruyn says this is a sad day for working class families. He says minister of Sports, Arts and Culture Gayton Mckenzie has just presented a gimmick around last Saturday’s match, and it is a real begging bowl approach to those who benefit and control South African sports:
# A taxation lecturer at the University of the Western Cape, Zurelda Mongane says government’s introduction of the two-pot retirement system could provide immediate financial relief to many. However, she has cautioned that individuals must approach this option cautiously and thoroughly understand its implications. Mongane is calling on South Africans to err on the side of caution and do their homework before making a life-changing decision:
# The United Nations has called for a “full investigation” into the killing of a US-Turkish woman in the occupied West Bank during a protest on Friday. The 26-year-old Aysenur Ezgi Eygi, was taking part in a protest against Jewish settlement expansion in the town of Beita near Nablus. She was allegedly shot by Israeli troops. The AFP news agency says she was rushed to hospital with a gunshot to the head and later pronounced dead. Israeli forces earlier withdrew from Jenin city and its refugee camp in the occupied West Bank, following a major nine-day operation.
# Tennis: British tennis star Jack Draper has lost 7-5 7-6, 6-2 to Italy’s Jannik Sinner in his first grand slam semi-final at the US Open. The 25th seed became only the fourth British man in the Open era to reach the semi-finals at New York’s Flushing Meadows. Both Draper and Sinner received treatment from their trainers during a hot and humid match. He and Sinner are friends and played doubles together at the Canadian Open last month. Sinner will seek his second major championship on Sunday, facing the American Taylor Fritz.
# And, finally: The National Zoo in Pretoria today marks International Vulture Day, by celebrating the success of its Cape Vulture breeding and release programme. The programme has helped supplement wild populations of vulnerable species since 1996. Collaborating with VulPro, the National Zoo uses GPS tracking to monitor released birds. The initiative aligns with South Africa’s Multi-species Biodiversity Management Plan for Vultures, aiming to restore vulture populations by 2033.
