#The National Gambling Amendment Bill has been sent to the mediation committee for resolution. This is deemed a necessary step in instances where Parliament cannot pass a Bill. Recently, it has faced some objections and sparked debate. According to Parliament spokesperson Moloto Mothapo, the bill was forwarded to the National Council of Provinces for concurrence after its approval by the National Assembly last year:
# Education activist Hendrick Makaneta has urged the minister of Defense and Military Veterans, Angie Motshekga, to deploy the army to Eldorado Park, a Gauteng hotspot plagued by gang violence. Makaneta emphasises the need to protect learners, citing a recent school stabbing incident. He argues that police have failed to contain the violence and calls for immediate government action to ensure schools remain safe havens. He has urged the community to take a stand against gang activity:
# The Department of Home Affairs has intensified efforts to combat identity fraud by calling on individuals with blocked IDs to provide reasons within 30 days for why their IDs should not be canceled. Minister Leon Schreiber emphasised the importance of resolving wrongful blocks while cracking down on fraudulent documents. He says this move aims to ensure justice and uphold the rule of law in identity verification processes.
# The weekend turned into a sporting bonanza for South Africa, with convincing victories in cricket and rugby. In cricket Kagiso Rabada led the way for South Africa as they beat the West Indies by 40 runs in a tense finish in the second Test. The home side were dismissed for 222 chasing 263 for victory on the third afternoon at the Providence Stadium in Georgetown, Guyana, on Saturday. Rabada claimed three for 50 in 16 overs to finish on 299 test wickets while Keshav Maharaj took three of the final four wickets to conclude a tense but well-deserved win. The first test in Trinidad, robbed of almost 150 overs by rain, finished in a draw, with the Proteas winning the series one-nil.
# And in rugby, the Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus lauded the players for stepping up under challenging circumstances in their second Rugby Championship Test against the Wallabies to claim their second bonus-point win in as many weeks in Perth on Saturday. The Boks scored four tries without reply by the Wallabies for a final score of 30-12. Eben Etzebeth, who stepped in as captain after Salmaan Moerat was forced to leave the field due to concussion, was equally delighted with the win. Looking ahead at their next challenge against New Zealand, Erasmus expected a huge onslaught from the All Blacks.
