Good morning. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# The Energy Council of South Africa says clean technology dominates global investment
# Cosatu urges immediate action against the torture of Zimbabwean trade unionists
# And, Olympic Games: Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz to play for men’s singles gold in Paris
# Energy Council of South Africa CEO James Mackay has emphasised that clean technology is leading global investment. Mackay told the Sanlam environmental, social, and governance conference of the need for South African companies to become competitive and resilient, and recognising the impact of climate change. He argued that a just energy transition focused on industrialisation, will drive job creation, skill development, and manufacturing growth:
# City Power has successfully cut off illegal connections and removed ten-thousand-kilogrammes of cables worth 500-thousand-rand along London Road in Alexandra. Spokesperson Isaac Mangena says the joint operation with law enforcement aimed to reduce excessive electricity consumption in high-density areas. He emphasised the need for community cooperation to combat illegal connections and maintain reliable power supply while highlighting the risks posed by unauthorized connections and the strain on the grid.
# Union federation Cosatu supports the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions in calling for an end to arbitrary arrests and torture of activists in Zimbabwe. This comes ahead of the 44th Southern African Development Community Summit in Harare on 17 August. The congress has reported that Agricultural Trade Unions of Zimbabwe general secretary Robson Chere was violently detained and tortured. Cosatu’s Zanele Sabela demands a transparent investigation and accountability, urging SADC leaders to address these human rights issues:
# A police station in England was set on fire and objects thrown at officers as a protest in Sunderland escalated into a night of “criminal thuggery”. Eight people were arrested for a range of offences, including violent disorder and burglary. The riots broke out apparently in response to the Southport stabbings, which saw three young girls killed. Police in Liverpool were also forced to defuse tensions last night, as protesting groups gathered outside a mosque. Authorities fear unrest could continue this weekend.
# And, Olympic Games: The 24-time Grand Slam winner Novak Djokovic will face Carlos Alcaraz tomorrow in the men’s singles title match. The final will be a rematch of the past two Wimbledon finals, both won by Alcaraz. Djokovic is 37, which makes him the oldest man to play in a Summer Games tennis final. Alcaraz is 21, which makes him the youngest. The men’s singles bronze medal match will take place today between Lorenzo Musetti from Italy and the Canadian Félix Auger-Aliassime.
