# The DA has welcomed the High Court in Pretoria’s ruling, mandating Electricity minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa to ensure uninterrupted electricity for public hospitals, clinics, schools and police stations by 31 January 2024. The party’s national spokesperson for Mineral Resources and Energy, Kevin Mileham, sees the ruling as a declaration that ongoing load-shedding violates human rights. Mileham attributes the energy crisis to state capture, mismanagement and ANC cadre deployment. He emphasises a long-term solution lies in voting out the ANC in the 2024 elections.
# The Eastern Cape Liquor Board urges parents and communities to be vigilant before the weekend’s planned pens-down parties, coinciding with the end of exams. Reports of planned parties have been forwarded to police and liquor inspectors for swift action. Learners are strongly discouraged from participating in such activities. The board’s spokesperson, Mgwebi Msiya, urges the public to report any suspicious activities to authorities:
# The Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions Coalition South Africa urges president Cyril Ramaphosa to fulfill his promise to evacuate seven South African families trapped in the Gaza Strip. BDS SA claims it has been more than six weeks since Ramaphosa made the commitment. The coalition notes most foreign nationals have been evacuated by their governments, except the South Africans. They call for urgent government intervention to ensure the immediate release of South Africans from Gaza to Egypt without further delay.
# Netball: Australia’s national women’s soccer team, the Matildas, have expressed support for their netball counterparts who are striking over pay. Members of the professional Super Netball league are embroiled in an increasingly bitter dispute with Netball Australia over the terms of a new collective bargaining agreement. The Matildas fought a similar battle against Australia’s soccer body in 2015, and one of the players, Kyah Simon, says they know what the netball players are going through. The netball players are effectively unemployed since the previous agreement expired in September.
# And finally: Cyber Security experts have warned that sextortion scams are on the rise worldwide. Advisor Andy Mashaile revealed to eNCA that scammers are targeting young children who have access to online platforms. He says the scams involve people being requested to send pornographic images of themselves and then a ransom is required in order for them to not be leaked:
