Good morning. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# The Institute or Race Relations believes an ANC-EFF coalition would pursue a radical agenda
# Gauteng non-profit organisations again threaten legal action over funding
# And cricket: There will be a fan park at the Wanderers during the T20 World Cup
# The Institute of Race Relations says it is a reasonable assumption that a post-election government combining the ANC and EFF would pursue a radical agenda. The EFF has stated that a coalition with the ANC would rest on three non-negotiable policy items, namely expropriation of land without compensation, free education, and nationalisation of mines. The institute’s Terence Corrigan says a legal framework needs to be introduced to enhance coalition agreements:
# AfriForum has confirmed its 134 observers and 170 neighbourhood watches are ready for the election period. Community Safety spokesperson Jacques Broodryk says they will closely monitor polling stations and remain on high alert for potential violence. He says AfriForum’s air wing, with over 40 drones, is also on standby to gather live information and track suspects:
# The Gauteng Department of Social Development has not yet paid all the non-profit organisations it has signed agreements with. The High Court in Johannesburg directed the department to finalise by last week Friday the adjudication of applications submitted by NPOs in November last year. In a meeting with organisations on the 14th of this month, premier Panyaza Lesufi promised they would receive their subsidies by last week Friday. The NPOs are now threatening a second bout of legal action to force the department to pay up.
# The International Organisation for Migration says rescue workers are facing several challenges in trying to recover bodies following Friday’s landslide in Papua New Guinea in the Pacific region. The landslide buried more than two-thousand people alive and caused major infrastructure damage. The organisation’s Serhan Aktoprak says rocks are still falling from the mountain, the soil is cracking, and water is flowing under the debris, making the search and rescue effort more difficult:
# Cricket: Gauteng lovers of the game will be treated to a fan park at the Wanderers in Johannesburg during the T20 World Cup in the Caribbean and the US. They will be able to watch the Proteas’ match against Sri Lanka on Monday, and the encounter between India and Pakistan on the ninth of next month. The matches will be shown on a giant screen, and there will also be a family picnic area, food trucks and activities. The tournament kicks off on Saturday.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-36-cents and the euro at 19-rand-97-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-45-cents and Bitcoin trades at 67-thousand-813-dollars-63-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-343-dollars-50-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 82-dollars-84-cents a barrel.
