Good morning. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# The Ngcobo tragedy’s search and rescue operation has been completed
# Eskom refutes media reports about the excessive use of diesel to avert load-shedding
# And, tennis: Ons Jabeur’s tough year continues at the Rome Open
# The Eastern Cape Department of Health says after six hours of searching for survivors of the Ngcobo tragedy, the operation has been completed. Five people were killed and 15 injured when a wall of a shop collapsed yesterday. Spokesperson Mkhululi Ndamase says MEC Nomakhosazana Meth thanks the emergency medical services personnel and other first responders for ensuring many lives were saved:
# Eskom has dismissed speculation that it is extensively using open-cycle gas turbines to avert load-shedding, which has not been implemented for 44 days. It says the continuous suspension is due to sufficient generation capacity, resulting from a more reliable generation fleet. Eskom’s spokesperson, Daphne Mokwena, says the power utility’s budget for diesel from April to June is 5.8-billion-rand, and as of ninth of this month, only 19.7-percent of that has been spent:
# Indian opposition leader Arvind Kejriwal has been granted temporary bail to campaign in the country’s ongoing general elections, but he will have to surrender again on 2 June. Kejriwal, the chief minister of Delhi who heads the Aam Aadmi party, has been held in jail since March when he was arrested on money-laundering charges. He has maintained that his arrest and detention was politically motivated to prevent him taking part in the election, which began in April and will continue until June.
# Tennis: Ons Jabeur’s tough year continues after being dumped out of the Rome Open in the second round by Sofia Kenin 7-5, 2-6 and 6-4. Tunisia’s Jabeur, who is ranked ninth in the world, was beaten by unseeded American Kenin in a gruelling match which lasted two hours and 17 minutes in the hot Rome sunshine. After reaching the quarter-finals in Madrid, Jabeur, who in 2022 became the first Arab and Tunisian player to win a WTA 1000 title, looked to be on the right track.
# And, prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle visited Nigeria yesterday as part of his promotion of the Invictus Games, the sporting event he founded for wounded military veterans. The couple arrived in the capital Abuja where they visited a school to open an event on mental health for students. Meghan joined the Duke of Sussex on the stage before they left for a meeting with Nigerian military commanders as part of the Invictus programme.
