# The GOOD Party has dismissed the DA’s suggestion for a special sitting to elect a Speaker as the 6th Parliament concludes without filling the vacancy. This follows Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula’s resignation amid corruption allegations. Members of the National Assembly’s programme committee rejected the proposal. GOOD Party chief whip Brett Herron says there are constitutional and National Assembly rules regarding the appointment of a Speaker:
# Local community policing structures and residents in KwaZulu-Natal have applauded the inauguration of five modern police stations in Gamalakhe, Donnybrook, Melmoth, KwaDabhazi and eManguzi. Speaking at eManguzi Police Station, minister Bheki Cele said it would improve police response times and service delivery. They also serve as a meeting point for South African and Mozambican law enforcement to combat cross-border crimes:
# Germany warns of consequences following an intolerable cyberattack on members of the Social Democratic Party, attributing the incident to Russian state-sponsored hackers. Foreign minister Annalena Baerbock announced the findings of a federal government investigation, identifying the group responsible as APT28, also known as Fancy Bear. This revelation highlights the seriousness of the threat posed by Russian cyber activity, prompting Germany to summon a Russian embassy official. Australia has joined Germany in condemning such actions, expressing solidarity and calling for responsible behaviour in cyberspace.
# Rugby: The Blitzboks secured their place in the quarter-finals of the Sevens tournament in Singapore with a 20-19 victory over France. They were already 15-nil ahead at half-time, but France took the lead with three quick tries before the Boks dotted down their fourth try in the last seconds. Fiji beat Ireland 26-19 in another game. South Africa’s women were beaten 34-7 by Japan this morning.
# And, today marks the 25th anniversary of International Firefighters’ Day, honouring those who risk their lives to safeguard communities and property. Established in 1999, it commemorates the lives lost in a wildfire in Victoria, Australia, with the red and blue ribbon symbolising firefighters’ bravery. The day not only pays tribute to firefighters who have made sacrifices while serving their communities; it also recognises their service, reflect on their sacrifices, and reaffirms support for their families and communities worldwide.
