In this bulletin:
# Police vow to trace more suspects behind the manufacturing of child pornography
# NSFAS devises a direct payment mechanism for student allowances
# And, tennis: An emotional win for Rafael Nadal in Madrid
# National Police commissioner Fannie Masemola says officers will continue to trace more suspects behind the possession, downloading, accessing and manufacturing of child pornography. This comes after two suspects aged 58 and 62 were arrested in connection with the crime in KwaZulu-Natal. Police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe says this brings to 13 the number of suspects arrested locally in a joint operation with America’s Department of Homeland Security:
# The National Student Financial Aid Scheme has devised a direct payment mechanism to address the ongoing non-payment of allowances. It will be implemented for payments due at the end of next month and will distribute allowances directly to student’s bank accounts. The scheme’s spokesperson Ishmael Mnisi says they will ask all beneficiaries to update their details to enable a smooth implementation:
# British troops could be deployed on the ground in Gaza to help deliver aid via a new sea route. The US has said no American forces would go ashore and an unnamed “third party” would drive trucks along a floating causeway onto the beach. The UK is understood to be considering tasking British troops with this when the aid corridor opens next month. However, sources told the BBC no decision has yet been made.
# Tennis: Rafael Nadal rolled back the years to claim an emotional victory against Australia’s Alex de Minaur at the Madrid Open. The 37-year-old showed flashes of his vintage best to thrill his home fans in a 7-6, 6-3 win. He will next meet Pedro Cachin in round three after the Argentine defeated America’s Frances Tiafoe. Nadal reversed a straight-sets defeat in Barcelona against De Minaur with an inspired performance in front of a crowd which included the king of Spain and French soccer icon Zinedine Zidane.
# And, the University of South Africa says it will broaden its project, Strengthening School Belonging among Urban High School Boys. It says school underperformance and high dropout rates create a pool of vulnerable youth. Unisa’s Shahieda Jansen says when boys underperform academically, they are more likely to end up in the criminal justice system or in graveyards. She adds with this project the university directly addresses a major local concern as well as a global problem.
