# Five men die in an accident near Keimoes in the Northern Cape
# More than a thousand people have been arrested and hundreds of vehicles have been impounded over Easter
# And, cricket: Sri Lanka level the T20 series against the Proteas Women
# Five men were killed when two cars collided head-on on the N14 near Keimoes in the Northern Cape yesterday evening. Four Kakamas residents, travelling in one of the cars, as well as one of the four South Korean men in the other car, died on the scene. Three injured people were rushed to hospital. Police spokesperson Sergio Kock says the Korean travellers were on their way from Kakamas to Upington:
Meanwhile, more than a thousand road users have been arrested and 900 vehicles have been impounded in law enforcement operations in all nine provinces since the start of the Easter weekend. Transgressions include drunken driving, producing false driving documentation, driving recklessly, and overloading of both goods and passengers. Road Traffic Management Corporation spokesperson Simon Zwane says one of the major concerns are unroadworthy vehicles, and 274 vehicles with defects vehicles have so far been discontinued:
# The Freedom Front Plus in Gauteng says the submissions by most of those who participated in the Basic Education Laws Amendment Bill public hearings, as well as numerous written submissions, make it clear the majority of parent and school communities in the province are opposed to the BELA Bill. FF Plus spokesperson Anton Alberts says the ANC ignored these opinions in defiance of previous Constitutional Court judgements:
# A three-ship convoy has left the Cypriot port of Larnaca with 400-tonnes of food and other supplies for Gaza as concerns about hunger in the territory soar. US charity World Central Kitchen says the supplies are enough to prepare more than one-million meals. The vessels and a barge are carrying ready-to-eat items like rice, pasta, flour, legumes, canned vegetables and proteins. Also on board are dates, which are traditionally eaten to break the daily fast during the holy month of Ramadan.
# And, cricket: The Proteas Women missed ill captain Laura Wolvaardt in the second T20 against Sri Lanka in Potchefstroom yesterday. The visitors claimed a seven-wicket victory to level the three-match series one-all. The Proteas dominated the first match in Benoni. Yesterday, they reached 84 for two at the halfway point, but then slumped to 138 for eight. The Sri Lankans reached the target with seven balls to spare. The final T20 will be played in East London on Wednesday.
