# And in tennis, Grigor Dimitrov stuns Carlos Alcaraz to reach the Miami Open semi-finals
# President Cyril Ramaphosa has welcomed additional provisional measures ordered by the International Court of Justice to prevent Israel from causing irreparable harm in respect of the ongoing siege of Gaza. The Court agreed with South Africa’s assertion that the situation in Gaza had deteriorated significantly since the Court’s Order of 26 January, as a result of Israel’s failure to comply with that order. The president’s spokesperson, Vincent Magwenya says it is necessary for the court to indicate further provisional measures:
Meanwhile, Ramaphosa has conveyed his condolences to the Republic of Botswana and to the family and friends of the 45 bus crash victims that died in Limpopo yesterday. The bus which was transporting Easter pilgrims from Botswana to Moria was travelling on the R518 Road near Mokopane, Limpopo when it crashed. The president’s spokesperson, Vincent Magwenya says president Mokgweetsi Masisi of Botswana expressed his gratitude for the cooperation that the government of Botswana has received from the Department of International Relations and Cooperation:
# The South African Rainbow Alliance has selected former Johannesburg Speaker, Colleen Makhubele, as their premier candidate for Gauteng. Makhubele, now president of SARA, advocates for women leadership. She emphasises the pivotal role of women voters in shaping Gauteng’s future and urges participation in the upcoming elections. Makhubele says SARA is confidence in providing competent leadership, as demonstrated by their qualification to contest nationally. She encourages all South Africans to exercise their voting rights on 29 May.
# The Molopo Magistrate’s Court adjourned Agnes Setshwantsho’s case to 22 May, pending transfer authorisation to a High Court. Setshwantsho is facing charges of murder and fraud, for the suspected murder of her relatives including her husband and her son for insurance payouts. National Prosecuting Authority North West spokesperson, Henry Mamothame, says Setshwantsho will remain in police custody until her next court date:
And finally in tennis, Carlos Alcaraz’s hopes for a Sunshine Double came undone in a spectacular fashion as the top-seeded Spaniard yesterday fell 6-2, 6-4, to Grigor Dimitrov. The eleventh seeded Bulgarian will now move on to face Alexander Zverev in the Miami Open semi-finals. It was a crushing defeat for Alcaraz, who arrived in Miami full of confidence after the Indian Wells, with hopes of becoming the first man to clinch the Sunshine Double since Roger Federer in 2017. In the other men’s semifinal today, second-seeded Jannik Sinner will be up against third-seeded Daniil Medvedev.
