# ANC national chairperson Gwede Mantashe says union federation COSATU must work to resolve its internal matters at it’s 15th national congress. The congress descended into chaos in Midrand, Johannesburg, yesterday due to infighting and the suspension of deputy president Mike Shingange. NEHAWU withdrew its support for Shingange despite being the union’s president, while NUM, SAMWU, DENOSA and SACCAWU continued to back him. Mantashe says COSATU must emerge stronger and more united:

# AfriForum says the National Water Act does not make redress a separate requirement that must be met before a water licence application can be considered. The organisation is challenging a requirement on the Department of Water and Sanitation’s online system for applicants to show how their proposed water use will address past racial and gender discrimination. AfriForum’s Marais de Vaal says the requirement could affect investment, jobs and productive water use:

# The EFF rejects a policing culture in which the disappearance of women is treated as a non-urgent ordinary matter until families and communities generate sufficient pressure to compel intervention. This follows the discovery of the bodies of six women in Kempton Park, Gauteng, over the past two months. The EFF says more than one woman’s body had reportedly been discovered in the area before there was meaningful intervention by police. It says this raises serious questions about the capacity and willingness of SAPS to identify patterns of violence.

# Cricket: England’s white-ball head coach, Brendon McCullum, hopes former captain Kevin Pietersen’s big personality and fierce competitiveness will rub off on the players. Pietersen has joined the setup as a specialist mentor until next year’s 50-over World Cup in Southern Africa. He linked up with the squad in Southampton before the first of three T20s and three ODIs against Sri Lanka, starting tomorrow. McCullum says Pietersen has already made a massive impact:

# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 16-rand-31-cents and the euro at 18-rand-81-cents. One British pound costs 21-rand-96-cents and Bitcoin trades at 77-thousand-260-dollars. Gold sells at four-thousand-292-dollars-28-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 108-dollars-98-cents a barrel.

# And finally: Apple TV’s horror-comedy Widow’s Bay dominated the 78th Emmy Awards held in Los Angeles, winning 14 awards, including best comedy series and supporting actress for Kate O’Flynn. Matthew Rhys became the first actor in Emmy history to win multiple lead actor awards for performances in different shows in the same year, for Widow’s Bay and The Beast in Me. Jean Smart made history with a fifth consecutive victory for her starring role in Hacks. The Pitt won seven awards, including Best Drama Series and Lead Drama Actor for Noah Wyle.
