# Deputy president Paul Mashatile says there is an opportunity to advance South Africa’s strategic objectives in trade, investment, industrialisation, multilateral cooperation and governance, while deepening political and diplomatic ties with China. He met with Chinese Premier Li Qiang on Sunday in Johannesburg. During the meeting, Mashatile emphasised South Africa’s readiness to expand value-added exports, attract greater Chinese investment in beneficiation, manufacturing, renewable energy, and digital sectors. Li also expressed Beijing’s readiness to partner with South Africa in protecting the multilateral trading system.
# The ANC says the G20 Leaders’ Summit has showcased South Africa’s capacity to lead, convene, and facilitate meaningful dialogue among the world’s major leaders and economies. The summit, which concluded on Sunday in Johannesburg, was held on African soil for the first time. ANC national spokesperson, Mahlengi Bhengu, says they welcome the adoption of the Leaders’ Declaration, which reflects a united global commitment to transforming the international financial architecture, advancing a just energy transition, and strengthening continental value-chains:
The MK Party, however, rejects the adopted G20 Leaders’ Declaration, saying the document represents a continuation of global power imbalances and the systematic erosion of African sovereignty. The 30-page declaration has a strong focus on development issues in Africa, including promoting economic growth and trade. The MK Party says the declaration has been crafted for the entrenchment of global hegemonies, whose primary interest is controlling African minerals, shaping African fiscal and dictating energy transitions. It adds that the document is stacked with promises, yet is empty of justice.
# President Cyril Ramaphosa is attending the 7th AU–EU summit in Luanda, Angola, today and tomorrow, where African and European leaders will reaffirm their 25-year partnership. The summit follows recent ministerial meetings shaping policy recommendations for both continents. The meeting also comes after the conclusion of South Africa’s G20 Presidency.
# Tennis: Italy secured a historic third consecutive Davis Cup title after beating Spain 2-0 in front of their home crowd in Bologna. 2021 Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini served 13 aces on his way to a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Pablo Carreno Busta in the opening match of the tie. Flavio Cobolli earned a hard-fought 1-6, 7-6, 7-5 win against Jaume Munar to secure Italy’s success. Cobolli says this is a special moment in his career:
