In this bulletin:
# Ronald Lamola says the G20 should send a message that the world can move on without the US
# The GOOD Party says the G20 summit is a perfect opportunity for the implementation of a wealth tax
# And the MK Party criticises the approval of the modular nuclear programme
# Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Ronald Lamola, says the G20 Leaders’ Summit will not be paralysed by the absence of the US from adopting a declaration. He took part in the inaugural Bloomberg Africa Business Summit in Johannesburg on Tuesday. The US is boycotting the summit, maintaining its false narrative that White Afrikaner farmers are being subjected to a genocide in South Africa. Lamola admitted that it won’t be easy to adopt the summit declaration without the world’s richest country:
Meanwhile, the GOOD Party says the G20 Leaders’ Summit is the perfect opportunity for president Cyril Ramaphosa to announce the implementation of a more progressive tax regime. A recent study by Patriotic Millionaires and Oxfam SA showed that most South African dollar millionaires would support a two-percent annual tax on their wealth to better fund social protection, education, and the energy transition. GOOD’s secretary general, Brett Herron, says a special tax on the rich can be a lever to address unsustainable inequality:
# The MK Party says it is concerned about the government’s decision to advance the modular nuclear programme, an initiative originally championed by former president Jacob Zuma in 2010. The decision allows South Africa to participate in the nuclear fuel cycle. The MK Party says that during Zuma’s presidency, the country had the resources and the strategic vision to pursue this critical nuclear build, but it was subjected to legal and political obstruction. It adds that it is troubling that a programme once dismissed as unaffordable has now been approved.
# Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman says his country did everything right to investigate the 2018 killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. A US-based journalist and critic of Saudi Arabia’s government, Khashoggi was killed at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul. The crown prince visited the White House on Tuesday. US intelligence concluded that the crown prince approved the capture or killing of Khashoggi, a prominent critic. In the Oval Office, Bin Salman told reporters that Khashoggi’s murder was a mistake:
# Soccer: Scotland has qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup for the first time in 28 years after beating Denmark 4-2. Goals from Scott McTominay, Lawrence Shankland, Kieran Tierney and Kenny McLean secured automatic qualification for Scotland. Austria fought back from a goal down to draw 1-1 with Bosnia-Herzegovina to qualify for the global showpiece for the first time since 1998. 2010 champions Spain, Belgium and Switzerland also punched their tickets to the World Cup to be held in the US, Canada, and Mexico.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-17-cents and the euro at 19-rand-89-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-56-cents and Bitcoin trades at 91-thousand-397-dollars. Gold sells at four-thousand-75-dollars-13-cents a fine ounce, and Brent crude oil is quoted at 64-dollars-24-cents a barrel.
