# A Unisa lecturer says South Africa made a compelling case against Israel

# University of South Africa lecturer, Mametlwe Sebei, says South Africa’s legal team beyond a shadow of a doubt, made a compelling case for genocide against Israel at the International Court of Justice. South Africa submitted a request to the court that Israel’s military assault on Gaza transgressed its obligations under the 1948 Genocide Convention. Israel has denied this. Sebei says South Africa’s case was based on facts and the principles of international humanitarian law:
MEanwhile, lawyers from the Eastern Cape, led by Gqeberha-based law firm Wikus van Rensburg Attorneys, have submitted a notice of intention to file a civil case against the US government for its alleged support of the conflict in Gaza. Van Rensburg, the founder of the firm, accuses the US government of being liable and complicit in supporting Israel. Van Rensburg says if the court finds Israel has contravened international law, they will also pursue a civil matter against the United Kingdom for its complicit conduct.
# ActionSA is set to announce its nominee for the City of Tshwane’s deputy mayor position today. The announcement is expected to be made by the party’s national chairperson, Michael Beaumont. ActionSA’s spokesperson, Samkelo Mgobozi, says they have consistently been advocating for the need for a deputy mayor to ensure that the principles of co-governance were applied:
# Golf: England’s Tommy Fleetwood birdied the final two holes to win the Dubai Invitational by one shot over Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy and South Africa’s Thriston Lawrence. McIlroy headed into the final hole with a one-shot lead, however, his tee shot on the final hole found the water. The Englishman sunk the incredible 16-foot birdie to claim victory in Dubai. Lawrence finished alongside McIlroy at 18 under. Fleetwood says it was important to remain focused, especially on the last two holes:
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-64-cents and the euro at 20-rand-44-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-78-cents and Bitcoin trades at 42-thousand-551-dollars-75-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-54-dollars-21-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 78-dollars-45-cents a barrel.
# And finally, blockbusters Barbie and Oppenheimer continued to rake in the accolades across multiple award categories. The World War Two-set drama Oppenheimer won eight awards at the 29th annual Critics Choice Awards, including Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Junior, and Best Director for Christopher Nolan. Barbie received six awards, including Best Comedy. In the television categories, Hulu’s fan-favourite series The Bear and Netflix’s road-rage-inspired limited series Beef scored four awards while HBO’s comedy-drama Succession won three. Harrison Ford was honoured with the Career Achievement Award.
