BULLETIN 9 July 9 am
Good morning. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# The DA wants a parliamentary inquiry into political interference in the criminal justice system
# The US Supreme Court rules that Trump can continue with mass layoffs
# And soccer: Chelsea is through to the Club World Cup final
# The DA is calling for a joint parliamentary inquiry between the portfolio committees of Police and Justice to investigate allegations of corruption and political interference in the criminal justice system. This follows the damning allegations made by KwaZulu- Natal’s Police Commissioner, Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, which directly implicates Police minister Senzo Mchunu. The DA says a formal parliamentary inquiry is essential to uncover the truth, establish accountability, and restore integrity to the criminal justice system. It adds that citizens deserve a police service that is free from political interference.
# The GOOD Party has condemned the South African Social Security Agency’s decision to delay the July grant payments for thousands of beneficiaries flagged for review. SASSA delayed some payments in July targeted at beneficiaries who are suspected of having extra sources of income. GOOD’s secretary general, Brett Herron, says the truth is that this review process forms part of a broader pattern of exclusion:
# ActionSA Gauteng Women’s Forum says gender-based violence is a national crisis that demands urgent, coordinated, and unapologetic action. The party has condemned the brutal and senseless murder of Letta Ndlovu, a resident of Lawley, Johannesburg South. She was killed in an act of gender-based violence allegedly committed by her partner, Ayanda Mthimkhulu. ActionSA Gauteng Women’s Forum secretary, Mpumi Edward, says Ndlovu’s death must not become just another statistic:
# The Supreme Court has lifted a lower court order that blocked sweeping layoffs of federal workers by the US president Donald Trump’s administration. The decision could result in hundreds of thousands of job losses, including at the departments of Treasury, Agriculture, Commerce, and Health. Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, who was the sole member of the nine-person court to publicly dissent from the decision, accused her colleagues of demonstrating an enthusiasm for greenlighting Trump’s legally dubious actions in an emergency posture.
# Soccer: Chelsea are through to the Club World Cup final after beating Fluminense 2-0 in New Jersey. Twenty-three-year-old Brazilian Joao Pedro, who joined The Blues from Brighton last week, found the back of the net in the 18th minute with a superb strike and again early in the second half to seal the victory. Chelsea will face either Real Madrid or Paris Saint-Germain in Sunday’s final. Coach Enzo Maresca says making the final is special:
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-78-cents and the euro at 20-rand-81-cents. One British pound costs 24-rand-13-cents and Bitcoin trades at 108-thousand-353-dollars. Gold sells at three-thousand-295-dollars-71-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 69-dollars-51-cents a barrel.
