# Iran’s United Nations ambassador, Amir Saeid Iravani, has accused the US of recklessly choosing to sacrifice its own security merely to safeguard Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu. This comes after the US bombed Iranian nuclear facilities over the weekend, which Tehran has warned will have irreparable consequences. During an emergency UN Security Council meeting on Sunday, Iravani dismissed the offer of diplomacy on nuclear talks as a deceitful policy to mislead the international community:
Meanwhile, United Nations Secretary General António Guterres says the US attack on Iranian nuclear facilities marks a perilous turn in the Middle East, a region that cannot endure another cycle of destruction. He addressed an emergency UN Security Council meeting in New York on Sunday. Guterres has called for a halt to fighting and a return to serious, sustained negotiations on the Iran nuclear programme. He also urged Iran to trust the UN’s Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty:
# Deputy president Paul Mashatile’s sister-in-law is linked to Sizekhaya Holdings, which has been awarded the licence to operate South Africa’s national lottery for eight years. According to the amaBhungane Centre for Investigative Journalism, among Sizekhaya’s shareholders is Bellamont Gaming, a company co-owned and co-directed by Khumo Bogatsu – Mashatile’s sister-in-law. Sizekhaya Holdings has dismissed any suggestion that its successful bid was tainted by political connections. It adds that Bogatsu is not a political office holder and is fully entitled to pursue any legitimate commercial interest.
# The South African Democratic Teachers’ Union reiterated its calls on all its members who serve in the school governing bodies across the country to ignore the unlawful guidelines for the implementation of the Basic Education Laws Amendment Act. This follows after Basic Education minister Siviwe Gwarube released implementation guidelines on school languages and admissions. Sadtu’s spokesperson, Nomusa Cembi, says school governing bodies must demand the implementation of the BELA regulations:
# Motorsport: MotoGP championship leader Marc Márquez of Ducati continued his bid for a seventh world title by winning the Italian Grand Prix, his 93rd career victory across all classes. His brother, Alex of Gresini Racing, finished second with VR46 Racing’s Fabio Di Giannantonio in third. South Africa’s Brad Binder finished ninth for KTM Factory Racing.
