# The Special Investigating Unit says it has referred three-thousand-374 cases to the National Prosecuting Authority and the Hawks in the past five years. These referrals involve corruption across various state institutions, municipalities and public entities. According to the Hawks, 58 of these cases are currently before the courts, and 96 dockets are awaiting a decision from the NPA. SIU head Andy Mothibi told Parliament that they only refer matters to the NPA if the evidence suggests criminal conduct:
# The Public Servants Association says the integration of the South African Police Service Border Unit personnel into the Border Management Authority needs thorough scrutiny and due diligence. The association says the BMA is grappling with a severe budget shortfall of 4.35-billion-rand and understaffing. PSA’s Claude Naiker says transferring the four-thousand-354 police officers who are currently assigned to border protection duties would still leave the BMA with four-thousand-195 vacancies:
# The Eastern Cape government says the death toll from the recent devastating floods has risen to 92 across the province. The body of a teenage girl was discovered along the Mthatha River yesterday evening, increasing the number of fatalities in Mthatha alone to 68. Provincial government spokesperson, Khuselwa Rantjie, says they expect the death toll to increase further as the recovery process is continuing, especially in the hardest hit OR Tambo District Municipality:
# Fifty-three-percent of voters who backed US president Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election do not want the country to join in Israel’s conflict with Iran. This is according to a new Economist/YouGov poll. This comes as Trump has indicated that he has not yet made a final decision on whether America would get involved in the conflict.
# Tennis: Two-time finalist Alexander Zverev is into the last 16 at the Halle Open in Germany.
