# Eskom says the power system is stable but constrained
# Action Society demands the immediate removal of police officers who committed crimes
# And Oscar Pistorius makes a sporting return at the Ironman competition in Durban
# Eskom says the power system remains stable and continues to demonstrate resilience. Eskom spokesperson, Daphne Mokwena says while system constraints are occasionally experienced, adequate emergency reserves are in place and are being strategically deployed to support demand during the morning and evening peak periods. She says the power utility is making steady progress as they move beyond the peak maintenance season:
# The Health Funders Association says a personal income tax hike of up to 115-percent would be needed to fund the National Health Insurance in its current form. They launched a legal challenge against the NHI Act, warning that it is fiscally impossible and would damage the economy. The association’s CEO, Thoneshan Naidoo, proposes a hybrid model combining public and private funding to make universal healthcare more affordable and sustainable:
# Action Society demands the immediate removal of police officers who committed crimes from the South African Police Service without pay until their cases are resolved. This after Parliament’s portfolio committee on Police revealed several officers accused of rape, attempted murder, drug dealing, and corruption still serve actively. Action Society’s Juanita du Preez warns that allowing these officers to remain on duty is causing a crisis of public trust in law enforcement:
# With measles cases in the United States still mounting, neighbouring countries Canada and Mexico are also experiencing significant outbreaks, in some cases fatal. Authorities in the Canadian province Ontario announced a premature infant born with a measles infection had died. At least four people have died in Mexico in 2025, with three in the US, all of whom were unvaccinated. This years’ measles outbreaks are the biggest Canada and Mexico have seen in decades, with the World Health Organisation warning low vaccination rates are considered the key driver.
# Soccer: South Africa and Tanzania played out an uninspiring goalless draw in an international friendly played at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on Friday evening. Bafana coach Hugo Broos gave Deano van Rooyen, Khulumani Ndamane, Simphiwe Selepe, and Tshepang Moremi their first full start in the national team. Bafana Bafana will be back at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Tuesday 10 June, when they host Mozambique in their next international friendly.
# And finally: The paralympic medalist and convicted murderer Oscar Pistorius made his sporting return at the Ironman 70.3 in Durban on Sunday. Pistorius has been out on parole since last year and was granted permission to travel to KwaZulu-Natal. He competed in the first of two South African events in the world’s premier half-distance triathlon series and finished third in the disability category. Pistorius was convicted of the murder of his girlfriend, model Reeva Steenkamp, in 2013. It was his first competitive appearance in about 13 years, following his gold medal win at the Paralympic Games in London.
