# Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Ronald Lamola, together with Trade, Industry and Competition minister, Parks Tau, are leading South Africa’s delegation at the 2025 Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development Ministerial Council Meeting in Paris today and tomorrow. The meeting’s focus is on resilient, inclusive, and sustainable prosperity through rules-based trade, investment, and innovation. Lamola’s spokesperson, Chrispin Phiri, says South Africa is committed to dismantling financial barriers hampering Africa’s sustainable development:
# The Minister of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment, Dion George, has withdrawn the approval decision for the Industry Waste Tyre Management Plan. The plan aimed to address several challenges faced by the waste tyre sector, including limited local processing capacity, storage depot limitations, and logistical constraints. The department’s spokesperson, Thobile Zulu-Molobi, says concerns have been raised regarding the plan’s alignment with current sector realities and policy intent:
# The DA in Johannesburg has announced it will lodge a formal complaint with the Special Investigating Unit over more than one-billion-rand in tenders allegedly awarded to companies linked to current and former city councillors. The party is demanding lifestyle audits for all implicated officials and councillors, a forensic audit of tenders, and criminal charges where corruption is proven. The DA’s Belinda Kayser-Echeozonjoku says mayor Dada Morero has failed to act:
# Millions of South Koreans are voting in a snap election today for a new president to succeed Yoon Suk Yeol. Over 15-million people cast their ballots during a two-day early voting period last week, accounting for nearly 35-percent of the country’s 44.4-million eligible voters. Yoon plunged the country into chaos by declaring martial law in December, which ultimately led to his impeachment. The frontrunner is 60-year-old Lee Jae-myung of the liberal opposition Democratic Party. His main rival is Kim Moon-soo of the conservative People Power Party.
# Roadrunning: South African ultra-marathon star Gerda Steyn says her goal is to complete the coveted Comrades Marathon and Two Oceans Marathon double this year. The 35-year-old claimed her fifth straight Two Oceans Marathon victory in Cape Town in April, and will now aim to win her third consecutive Comrades title in the 89-kilometre Comrades Down Run on Sunday. Steyn says she is energised by the depth and talent within the field, viewing the challenging lineup as motivation to push her limits.
