# The DA Federal Council chairperson Helen Zille says the Western Cape High Court’s ruling that a VAT hike must officially be suspended is a victory for all South Africans. She says the decision ensures that changes to the VAT rate must be properly approved by Parliament before taking effect. Zille says the party is please with the outcome and will continue to fight for and with all South Africans to ensure an economy that grows and creates jobs:
# The South African Federation of Trade Unions says freedom without decent work, economic justice, dignity, safety, housing, without access to quality public services is not true freedom. He adds that while the political right to vote was achieved in 1994, economic liberation has been brutally deferred:
# The wildfire in the Silvermine section of Table Mountain National Park on Sunday intensified significantly due to a sudden shift in wind direction and increased wind speeds. Last night residents of a retirement village in Noordhoek were evacuated as a precaution. The fire began on Friday in the Upper Tokai area and was largely contained until Sunday late morning. It then started actively spreading toward Tokai, Zwaanswyk, Noordhoek and Clovelly. Ou Kaapse Weg on Sunday was closed in both directions between Steenberg and Sun Valley due to poor visibility caused by thick smoke.
# In the first 100 days since his return to office, president Donald Trump has upended parts of the rules-based world order that Washington helped build from the ashes of World War II. A former Middle East negotiator for Democratic and Republican administrations, Dennis Ross, told Reuters what the world is seeing is a huge disruption in world affairs. He added no one is certain what to make of what’s happening or what will come next. Trump launched a global tariff war, slashed U.S. foreign aid, disparaged NATO allies and embraced Russia’s narrative about its invasion of Ukraine.
# Soccer: Liverpool demolished Tottenham 5-1 to clinch the Premier League title at Anfield on Sunday, sealing a record-equalling 20th English top level crown. Arne Slot’s men are now level with rivals Manchester United as the joint-most successful club in English history. It is just their second title of the Premier League era and the first they have celebrated in front of fans since 1990. The win leaves Liverpool on 82 points, 15 clear of nearest challengers Arsenal with just four games remaining.
In the meantime, tickets for the 2026 World Cup are being sold on a third-party ticket exchange for as much as 1,1-million-rand for the final, despite FIFA not putting any on the market yet. Sky News uncovered that the website Vivid Seats already has listings for matches throughout the World Cup for matches being played in the United States and Canada. The world soccer governing body has now issued a warning to fans to be wary of unofficial websites already offering tickets for the event.
