In this bulletin:
# Trump says the situation in South Africa is very dangerous
# Golf: Tiger Woods withdraws from the Genesis Invitational
# And the government of national unity is the National Press Club’s newsmaker of the year
# US president Donald Trump has reiterated his attacks on South Africa, saying the situation in the country is dangerous. He signed an executive order last Friday, cutting US financial assistance to South Africa, citing disapproval of the country’s land expropriation policy and its genocide case against Washington’s ally Israel. Trump, who claims that there are widespread land grabs currently happening under the Expropriation Act, says the situation is bad for a lot of people:
# The Department of Social Development says while it acknowledges the vital role of non-profit organisations, it is enforcing compliance to foster transparency and accountability in the sector. To date, the Department has issued 41-thousand-787 notices of non-compliance to NPOs. Of this number, a total of six-thousand-221 NPOs have been deregistered for failure to honour their obligations in terms of the NPO Act. The department’s spokesperson, Bathembu Futshane, says the consequences for non-compliant NPOs are severe:
# The DA in Tshwane says the ANC government in the metro has allowed electricity losses to increase by 300-million-rand in just three months. The party’s, Jacqui Uys, says this is in stark contrast with what the government inherited from the DA, where electricity losses were reduced by 162-million-rand between July and September. She says not only is the metro not billing residents for electricity used, but the ANC government is also not keeping up the same pressure on Tshwane’s debtor’s book:
# Golf: Fifteen-time major champion Tiger Woods has withdrawn from this week’s Genesis Invitational, saying he is still processing the death of his mother. His mother Kultida passed away last week. Woods’ last official tournament appearance came in The Open at Royal Troon last July, when he missed the cut for the third consecutive major. The 49-year-old American has been replaced by countryman Jake Knapp in the Genesis Invitational. Knapp won for the first time on the PGA Tour at last year’s Mexico Open.
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-45-cents and the euro at 19-rand. One British pound costs 22-rand-79-cents and Bitcoin trades at 97-thousand-601-dollars. Gold sells at two-thousand-920-dollars-16-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 75-dollars-89-cents a barrel.
# And finally, the government of national unity has been named the 2024 National Press Club Newsmaker of the Year. The selection process involved nominations and motivations submitted by club members, with the final decision resting with the club’s executive committee. Acting chairperson Antoinette Slabbert says the government of national unity’s extensive media coverage, and the consequential impact on society makes them a deserving recipient of this year’s award. The newsmakers that the club has recognised over the years include the late former president Nelson Mandela, the Springboks, and Eskom.
