# Political analyst Sandile Swana says the ANC is in the dustbin of history as long as they keep people like president Cyril Ramaphosa, secretary general Fikile Mbalula and others. This is as Ramaphosa is set to deliver the party’s January 8 Statement in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, today as part of its 113th birthday celebrations. Swana told the SABC that the ANC’s renewal programme is a waste of time:
# Meanwhile, Political analyst Dale McKinley has highlighted the ANC’s need for a fresh message to win back former supporters, especially in the Western Cape. Speaking to Newzroom Afrika, McKinley urged the party to present clear strategies demonstrating their commitment to improving the lives of citizens, and restoring trust:
# Six people, five men and one woman, have been shot dead at a tavern in Pienaar township, Mpumalanga, in the early hours of this morning. Six others were wounded. Police have launched an investigation to determine the motive behind the attack. The police are urging anyone with information to come forward to aid the ongoing investigation.
# California’s governor, Gavin Newsom, has ordered an independent investigation into what caused some hydrants to lose water pressure, in the midst of multiple wildfires in Los Angeles. This is as the death toll from the fires has risen to eleven with over ten-thousand structures destroyed. Newsom says he has directed state water and firefighting officials to prepare an independent after-incident report, examining why there was reported loss of water pressure or unavailability of water to fight fires, especially in Pacific Palisades.
# Cricket: Last year’s runners-up Durban’s Super Giants got their SA20 campaign off to a winning start, beating the Pretoria Capitals by two runs at Kingsmead in Durban. Kane Williamson scored an unbeaten 60 as the homeside posted 209 for four in their 20 overs. In reply, the Capitals’ run-chase seemed on course through a 154-run opening partnership between Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Will Jacks. However, they lost five wickets for 38 runs. Giants captain, Kesh Maharaj, was impressed with their batting performance:
