# South African Communist Party general-secretary, Solly Mapaila, affirmed the party’s commitment to building a prosperous South Africa at the party’s Boksburg conference. He stressed advancing the national democratic revolution to combat class inequality, patriarchy, poverty, and racism aligning with SACP’s principles. He also reiterated their participation in the 2026 local government elections and the party’s opposition to the DA’s inclusion in the government of national unity:
In another development the SACP’s deputy general-secretary, Madala Masuku, welcomed the government’s decision to hold an inquest into Chris Hani’s 1993 assassination. At the conference, Masuku emphasised the importance of uncovering the truth. Hani’s killer, Janusz Walus, recently returned to Poland after completing parole, following 28-years in prison. Masuku stressed the inquest’s importance in delivering justice and closure:
# The University of South Africa vice-chancellor Puleng LenkaBula announced bold plans for growth. Speaking at the closing ceremony of the academic year, LenkaBula highlighted UNISA’s position as one of the world’s top four mega universities and its role in expanding capacity to address tertiary education challenges in South Africa and across the continent. She says that the university is able to improve service delivery:
# The City of Cape Town plans to implement desalination as part of its new water programme to increase its drinking water supply. The city is in the feasibility study stage for its first permanent desalination plant at Paarden Eiland. This plant will produce between 50- and 70-million litres of water per day. Mayoral committee member for Water and Sanitation, Zahid Badroodien, says the city aims to increase its water supply by 300-million litres daily by 2030, investing 43-billion-rand over the next three-years.
# And, cricket: Last night’s third and final T20 international between South Africa and Pakistan had to be abandoned after persistent rain and thunder at the Wanderers. Tickets for the match were sold out, but fans left disappointed as the Johannesburg thunderstorm spoiled the party. The Proteas won the series 2-0 courtesy of victories in Durban and Centurion last week. The three-game ODI series between the teams starts in Paarl on Tuesday.
