# The GOOD Party has welcomed the news of the deportation of Chris Hani’s murderer Janusz Waluś. The GOOD Party’s Brett Herron says having been released on parole two years ago, there was no benefit to South Africa in prolonging his stay in the country. He says the court found beyond doubt that Waluś and the late South African right-wing leader Clive Derby-Lewis were responsible for murdering Hani:
# Pharmaceutical company Adcock Ingram Limited has recalled of a batch of Panado Pediatric alcohol-free grape-flavoured syrup in South Africa. It’s due to precipitation detected in the syrup’s active ingredient, paracetamol. According to the company’s medical director, Dr Thiruvasan Govindsamy, both 50ml and 100ml products, with expiry dates in July 2025 and February and April 2026, are affected. Govindsamy says they do not expect patients to experience any side effects, but the product is recalled from distribution points and not from the point where people actually have it in their homes.
# French president Emmanuel Macron hopes to win a new lease of political life from today’s ceremonial reopening of Notre Dame. The ceremony marks the moment the Catholic church retakes possession of the cathedral, which was destroyed by fire in 2019. Joined by US president-elect Donald Trump, prince William and other international figures, he will seek to present the renovated cathedral as a symbol of France’s inner reserves of creative strength. The long-awaited event comes as France enters a period of deep uncertainty triggered by the fall of prime minister Michel Barnier’s government on Wednesday.
# Cricket: Sri Lanka looked to have taken control of the second Test against the Proteas at St George’s Park in Gqeberha yesterday. Pathum Nissanka’s 89 was the bedrock of Sri Lanka’s solid response but he missed the chance of a Test 100 when he was dismissed by Keshav Maharaj. South Africa were bowled out for 358, with Kyle Verreynne notching up his first Test 100 on home soil. Sri Lanka trails by 116 runs with Angelo Matthews and Kamindu Mendis resuming play this morning on 242 for 3.
# And the Department of Social Development will today launch the men’s fireside conversations in Willowvale, in the Eastern Cape. This initiative, in partnership with the Ubuntu Transformation Foundation, aims to involve men in the fight against gender-based violence and femicide. The department’s spokesperson Bathembu Futshane says the fight against this scourge requires male role models and a focus on addressing mental health and alcohol abuse:
