Good morning. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# The deputy president calls for unity in the BELA Act negotiation process
# A new collaboration between OUTA and Parliament promises improved public engagement
# And cricket: Only pride is at stake for the Proteas Women in the final T20 against England in Centurion
# Deputy president Paul Mashatile has called on all political parties in the government of national unity to stick to the approved process for discussing the Basic Education Laws Amendment Act. He dismissed claims of an agreement involving trade union Solidarity and AfriForum, stating it was not part of the official clearing house mechanism. Mashatile’s acting spokesperson Keith Khoza, says the GNU will soon convene to review recommendations and finalize the process collectively:
# The Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse has partnered with Parliament to improve public engagement in the legislative process. The collaboration aims to enhance transparency and ensure that the public’s concerns are better represented. OUTA’s Robyn Pasensie hopes the collaboration will promote inclusive dialogue between the public and lawmakers, strengthening democracy and government responsiveness to citizens’ needs:
# Cape Town mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis has declared a dispute against the District Development Model regulations, labeling them unconstitutional. The regulations, effective since May, mandate a One Plan for municipalities, granting veto power to the minister of Cooperative Governance. Hill-Lewis argues this undermines municipal autonomy and duplicates existing Integrated Development Plans. The city seeks resolution through the Intergovernmental Relations Framework Act, hoping to amend or withdraw the regulations to avoid further legal action.
# French president Emmanuel Macron reaffirmed his support for Ukraine and reiterated his condemnation of an escalation in Russia’s attacks against the country in a phone call with president Volodymyr Zelensky. Macron’s office says in the call he “condemned in the strongest possible terms Russia’s indiscriminate attacks which are consistently intensifying against towns, civilian populations and against Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.” A separate statement from Zelensky on the Telegram social media platform said he had again stressed to Macron the importance of a NATO invitation to Ukraine.
# And cricket: Only pride is at stake for the Proteas Women in tonight’s third and final T20 against England at SuperSport Park in Centurion. The visitors already clinched the series by winning the first two encounters. They beat the hostesses by four wickets in East London, followed by a comprehensive 36-run victory in Benoni. The T20s will be followed by one-day matches in Kimberley, Durban and Potchefstroom from Wednesday, while the one-off Test between the two countries starts in Bloemfontein on the 15th of next month.
