# The Jacob Zuma Foundation says it will consult political structures and legal advisors over former president Jacob Zuma’s expulsion from the ANC. Zuma was expelled in July for violating section 25 of the ANC constitution by supporting the MK Party while still a member of the ANC. Zuma’s spokesperson, Mzwanele Manyi told Newzroom Afrika Zuma was not given a fair chance to plead his case:
# Police minister Senzo Mchunu has called on companies to report extortion in the construction sector to the police. Addressing the National Construction Summit in Durban, Mchunu emphasised crime prevention and community engagement to combat lawlessness. This follows a partnership agreement signed aiming to ensure safe, crime-free construction sites nationwide. He highlighted that KwaZulu-Natal, Western Cape, Eastern Cape and Gauteng are the hotspots:
# The South African Communist Party has welcomed the International Criminal Court’s decision to issue arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant over war crimes. This comes after the ICC rejected Israel’s legal challenge under the Rome Statute. However, the SACP condemned the ICC’s simultaneous warrant against Palestinian leader Mohammed Deif, citing unjust equating of oppressors and oppressed.
# Tennis: Novak Djokovic has appointed Andy Murray to coach him for the 2025 Australian Open. Djokovic is bidding to win a record-extending eleventh title in Melbourne. He says he is excited to have one of his greatest rivals on the same side of the net, as his coach. Murray, who beat Djokovic to win the US Open in 2012 and Wimbledon in 2013, says he wants to help the 24-time Grand Slam champion achieve his goals. For the first time since 2017 Djokovic couldn’t win a Grand Slam this year.
# And BirdLife South Africa has named the Red-billed Oxpecker as their Bird of the Year for 2025. The bird will be celebrated all year long, with resources made available for learners on the society’s website. Oxpeckers perform a service to their hosts as well as the overall ecosystem by controlling tick populations. They also benefit their hosts by providing an early warning system of approaching danger. The bird is a cooperative breeder where up to seven helpers will assist the breeding pair to raise their young, which are normally raised within holes in trees.
