BULLETIN 20 November 9 am
Good morning. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# BOSA warns Nersa’s tariff hike will hurt low-income households and small businesses
# Gauteng’s Social Development MEC admits flaws in non-profit organisations’ funding process
# And Doctors Without Borders halts its operations in Haiti’s capital
# Build One South Africa says Eskom’s proposed 36-percent electricity tariff increase could force low-income households to turn to unsafe energy alternatives, putting their health and safety at risk. The party has deployed representatives to energy regulator, Nersa’s public hearings nationwide to express their opposition to the increase. BOSA spokesperson, Roger Solomons, argues the tariff increase will exacerbate inequality and threaten the survival of small businesses:
The GOOD Party meanwhile, says it is unfair to continue asking consumers to pay more without addressing the entire system’s inefficiencies. GOOD’s secretary-general, Brett Herron, says a combination of Eskom’s inability to manage its operations, Nersa’s failure to assist the power utility, and unregulated municipal surcharges, places electricity provision in South Africa fundamentally at odds with the aspirations of the developmental state:
# The DA says it has been vindicated after Gauteng’s Social Development MEC, Faith Mazibuko, admitted flaws in the province’s non-profit organisation funding process. The party had previously raised concerns over irregularities in the funding distribution, which they claimed led to delays and mismanagement. The DA’s Refiloe Nt’sekhe calls for improved transparency and accountability in the funding process to ensure NPOs receive the support they need:
# Doctors Without Borders has suspended activities in Haiti’s capital Port-au-Prince until further notice, following a series of threats by local police. This comes after a deadly attack on one of its ambulances last week in which two patients were shot and killed. Haiti’s capital city has been in a state of emergency since March after gangs took control of large parts of it through violence. Doctors Without Borders, which has been present in the country for three decades, says every day that they cannot resume activities is a tragedy.
# Soccer: Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has reportedly agreed a one-year contract extension, with the option of a further year until 2027. The 53-year-old’s current contract is due to expire at the end of this season. The Spaniard, who joined City in 2016, has won 18 trophies, including six Premier League titles and the Champions League. Guardiola has helped City become just the second English men’s team after Manchester United to win the Treble, the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League in the same season.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-6-cents and the euro at 19-rand-12-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-91-cents and Bitcoin trades at 92-thousand-189-dollars-9-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-637-dollars-79-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 73-dollars a barrel.
