# The SACP is reviewing its relationship with the ANC
# Joe Biden visits the Amazon rainforest
# And golf: Dean Burmester wins the Vodacom Origins of Golf title
# The South African Communist Party will use its fifth Special National Congress next month to review its decades-long relationship with the ANC. The Tripartite Alliance has been strained following the ANC’s decision to include the DA in the government of national unity. In its pre-conference discussion document, the SACP says its identity as an independent political entity has diminished and is increasingly seen as an extension of the ANC. It adds that the national elections’ outcomes have intensified questions about the alliance’s effectiveness.
# Department of Water and Sanitation Deputy Minister, Sello Seitlholo, is encouraging municipalities to urgently address water losses due to illegal connections and ageing infrastructure. Between 37-percent and 47-percent of water in South Africa is lost due to non-revenue water, which includes water lost to leaks and illegal connections. Seitlholo says the department will continue to support municipalities to ensure sustainable water supply to communities:
# The GOOD Party is calling for the City of Cape Town to realign its budget to deal with the current food-borne illness outbreak. Since September, 890 incidents of food-borne illnesses have been reported nationwide, with Gauteng and Kwazulu-Natal leading the field. In Gauteng, 23 deaths, mostly children, have been reported. The GOOD Party says an emergency budget realignment will ensure that the Education, Health and Waste Management Departments are properly funded to ensure the metro can deal with this health crisis.
# Joe Biden has become the first sitting US president to visit the Amazon, the world’s largest tropical rainforest. Yesterday, he engaged with local and Indigenous leaders working to conserve and protect this critical ecosystem. The Amazon region stores massive amounts of the world’s carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas driving climate change. Biden has signed a proclamation designating November 17 as International Conservation Day. He described the battle against climate change as a defining cause of his presidency:
# Golf: South Africa’s Dean Burmester captured the Vodacom Origins of Golf title by seven strokes over Jean Hugo after carding a six-under 66 at Oubaai Golf Estate in George, Western Cape. He has matched the second-largest margin of victory in the history of this series. Jacques Kruyswijk finished third on 20 under par. Burmester, who secured his first LIV Golf win in Miami in April, says it is super special to win in front of his family and friends:
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-13-cents and the euro at 19-rand-10-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-89-cents and Bitcoin trades at 90-thousand-532-dollars. Gold sells at two-thousand-591-dollars-34-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 71-dollars-12-cents a barrel.
