In this bulletin:
# Eskom revives a plan for unbundled tariffs to reflect the true electricity costs
# Saftu joins a rally at the Israeli embassy in Pretoria in solidarity with Palestine
# And, cricket: India outclass Proteas in first T20 clash
# Eskom is proposing unbundled electricity tariffs to better reflect actual costs by separating variable and fixed charges. The shift could lower rates for many residential customers and municipalities. Speaking to News24, independent consultant Shirley Salvoldi noted mixed impacts for customers, though Eskom’s revenue remains neutral. Eskom aims to promote fair pricing, and renewable integration, for a competitive electricity market by 2026.
In another development energy expert Sampson Mamphweli cautions that Eskom’s proposed power cuts in the City of Johannesburg, linked to a 4.9-billion-rand debt dispute, could stall economic growth. The City has given Eskom five-days to withdraw. The City, facing an additional 1.4-billion-rand bill, condemned the move and called for urgent negotiations to protect residents and businesses from disruptions. Mamphweli stresses to the SABC that an urgent resolution is needed:
# The South African Local Government Association in KwaZulu-Natal has urgently convened with municipal environmental health practitioners to address escalating food poisoning cases impacting learners. This comes as hundreds of learners have been affected by food poisoning. In an interview with the SABC, SALGA’s KZN director, Sabelo Gwala, expressed his concerns over system failures and rising criminal activity, calling for decisive measures to prevent further fatalities from food contamination:
# Union federation Saftu in partnership with the Palestine Solidarity Alliance, will join an anti-genocide protest outside the Israeli Embassy in Pretoria today. The protest, set to begin at noon, is in solidarity with Palestine and Lebanon, condemning Israel’s actions as genocide and apartheid. The demonstration calls for an end to the violence and for global unity against the ongoing conflict.
# And, cricket: India proved far too strong for the Proteas in their opening T20 international at Kingsmead in Durban last night. The visitors romped to a convincing win by 61 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the four-match series. India scored 202 for 8 while South Africa only managed 141, all out. India’s star batsman, Sanju Samson scored a brilliant 107 off just 56 balls, while South Africa’s Heinrich Klaasen and Ryan Rickelton could only manage 24 and 21 respectively. The next game in the series is tomorrow at St George’s Park.
