# Deputy president Paul Mashatile reportedly appeared before the ANC’s Integrity Commission at the weekend. According to the City Press, he was called to account for all the allegations mentioned against him in the media. Several exposés alleged Mashatile’s son-in-law benefited from state tenders and that the deputy president lived in houses allegedly bought with money made from tenders. He also allegedly misled Parliament by failing to declare his use of various properties, including a 37-million-rand Waterfall house in Gauteng. Mashatile has denied all the allegations.
# Save South Africa Civic Movement is calling on Transport minister Barbara Creecy to act with speed in addressing bullying and harassment by South African National Taxi Council members. It claims that private car owners have been complaining that they are being harassed by taxi patrollers when they give a lift to their family members. The movement’s, Tebogo Mashilompane, says it is clear that Santaco has become a law unto itself:
# The Cape Winelands District Municipality’s Fire Services says the Du Toitskloof Pass remains closed following a fire on the slopes of the pass yesterday evening. The fire has been contained. The municipality’s spokesperson, Anesca Roodt, says the area has not been deemed safe yet:
# US vice president Kamala Harris has pledged to do everything in her power to end the war in Gaza. She addressed a rally in Michigan, home to the US’s largest Arab-American population. Michigan has about 240-thousand registered Muslim voters. Harris says she will ensure that the hostages are released, end the suffering in Gaza, make sure Israel is secure, and ensure the Palestinian people can realise their right to dignity, freedom, security, and self-determination:
# Road running: Abdi Nageeye of the Netherlands won the men’s race at the New York City Marathon, his first world major title. The 35-year-old reached the finish line in two-hours-seven minutes-and-39 seconds, six seconds ahead of the 2022 men’s champion Kenya’s Evans Chebet. Albert Korir also from Kenya finished third. The women’s race was an all-Kenyan podium, with Sheila Chepkirui winning in two-hours-24-minutes-and-35-seconds, finishing 14 seconds ahead of defending champion Hellen Obiri and Vivian Cheruiyot.
