# Former Finance minister Mcebisi Jonas says the government of national unity would be able to sustain itself and achieve coherence only if the main parties, ANC and the DA, would let go of old ideas and politics. He addressed the Kgalema Motlanthe Foundation Inclusive Forum in the Drakensberg. Jonas says the survival of the government of national unity depends on an economic turnaround from the stagnation of recent years. He adds that there must also be greater efforts to protect democratic constitutionalism and ensure institutional stability.
# The DA has welcomed the Financial Action Task Force’s announcement that South Africa has made significant strides in addressing the concerns that led to its greylisting. The country has ticked off 37 out of 39 criteria required by the task force, with its next major review in 2026/2027. The DA’s, Wendy Alexander, says they have long called for substantial action to get off the grey list, as critical for South Africa to be seen as a safe legal jurisdiction for investment:
# KwaZulu-Natal police have arrested two suspects in connection with the murder of a teacher in Ntuzuma. The 46-year-old educator was shot dead in front of learners and her colleagues at Phikiswayo Primary School at Richmond Farm in July. Police spokesperson, Robert Netshiunda, says investigations have thus far managed to connect an inmate as the possible mastermind behind the murder:
# Former US president Donald Trump has promised to make America healthy, wealthy, and great again. He held a rally in his hometown of New York at Madison Square Garden on Sunday. Supporters of the Republican presidential nominee, included Tech billionaire Elon Musk, former wrestler Hulk Hogan, and his former attorney Rudy Giuliani. Trump says his supporters need to defeat vice president Kamala Harris’s radical left agenda and deliver a victory that is too big to rig:
# Tennis: Britain’s Jack Draper won the Vienna Open, to become the first player to win the tournament on his debut since countryman Andy Murray did so in 2014. The 22-year-old defeated Russia’s Karen Khachanov, 6-4, 7-5, to claim the biggest title of his career. Draper is having a breakout season, having reached his maiden Grand Slam semifinal at the US Open last month. He will rise to a career-high ranking of 15th in the world today.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-71-cents and the euro at 19-rand-11-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-94-cents and Bitcoin trades at 67-thousand-575-dollars-98-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-731-dollars-63-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 75-dollars-91-cents a barrel.
