# The ANC says former minister of Finance Tito Mboweni will be remembered not only for his immense contribution to the economy, but also for his unwavering connection to the people he served. Mboweni passed away in a Johannesburg hospital last night following a short illness. The ANC’s spokesperson, Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri, says comrade Tito’s brilliance contributed greatly in the economic debates that framed the transition to democracy, making him one of the trusted voices of reason within the ANC:
President Cyril Ramaphosa has expressed his deep sadness over Mboweni’s passing at the age of 65. The president’s spokesperson, Vincent Magwenya says he was the democratic South Africa’s first Minister of Labour from 1994 to 1999 in the Cabinet of founding president Nelson Mandela. He says Mboweni served as Governor of the South African Reserve Bank for a decade from 1999:
# The UN Interim Force in Lebanon, UNIFIL, says a fifth United Nations peacekeeper was wounded by gunfire in Naqoura, Lebanon, yesterday. The origin of the attack was not known, it added, and the peacekeeper was stable after undergoing surgery. This comes after world leaders condemned attacks on UNIFIL personnel by Israeli forces in southern Lebanon, after a second incident within two days. On Friday, the Israel Defence Force said its troops were responsible for an incident in which two Sri Lankan soldiers for UNIFIL wounded.
# Cricket: The Proteas yesterday cruised to a seven-wicket victory in their T20 World Cup match against Bangladesh at the Dubai International Stadium with 16 balls to spare. Bangladesh won the toss and a disciplined bowling effort by the Proteas restricted them to 106 for three. The South Africans reached the target after 17.2 overs with Player of the Match, Tazmin Brits, contributing 42 runs off 41 balls. The victory moves the South Africans to the top of the log in Group B for now, above the West Indies who are yet to play England on Tuesday.
# And, the City of Cape Town’s Durbanville Library celebrated having the first young patron to read one-thousand stories. The one-thousand Stories before School Reading campaign has been running for just over two years. The five-year-old Leandri Roodman became the first young patron to reach the milestone of one-thousand stories. Mayoral committee member for Community Services and Health, Patricia van der Ross says children are never too young to join the library, visit or be exposed to books:
