Good morning. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# The DA is to probe the Lotteries Commission’s alleged corruption cover-up
# AfriForum says police must get its house in order
# And, soccer: Bafana Bafana is victorious over Republic of Congo with a commanding win
# The DA says it will interrogate law enforcement agencies and the National Lotteries Commission board in the upcoming Trade, Industry and Competition Portfolio Committee meeting, scheduled for November 5th. The party’s Toby Chance says this comes after it was revealed that the commission spent close to 70-million-rand on legal fees, defending multiple staff disciplinary matters between 2019 and 2023, and, under the current board, litigating against staff members who are accused of abusing their positions and misdirecting lottery funds:
# AfriForum is calling on the police to pay attention to the unreliability of their crime statistics and also the service delivery at police stations. AfriForum’s spokesperson, Jacques Broodryk says the Auditor-General outlined several consequences of unreliable crime statistics in her report. This includes inaccurate and incomplete collection of complaints and victims’ details that detract from crime statistics and making it difficult to develop effective crime prevention strategies and allocate resources efficiently:
# Statistics South Africa has reported a 2.9-percent month-on-month increase in mining production for August. This growth is attributed to higher outputs in key sectors like platinum, iron ore, and gold mining, and follows a 1.5-percent decline in July. Stats SA’s statistician Juan-Pierre Terblanche, says the mining industry remains a significant contributor to the country’s economy, and this positive trend is a boost to overall economic performance:
# Soccer: Bafana Bafana stormed to an emphatic 5-0 triumph over the Republic of the Congo, firmly asserting their control over Group K in the race for 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualification. In front of a jubilant 40,000-strong crowd at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, the South Africans delivered a commanding performance that propelled them joint-top of Group K alongside Uganda, both with seven points. Teboho Mokoena was the star for Bafana in Gqeberha, netting a stunning brace.
# And, a century-old Mount Everest mystery may just have been solved with the discovery of a foot near the summit of the world’s highest mountain. It was found encased in a sock with the name AC Irvine embroidered on it. Twenty-two-year-old Sandy Irvine was the youngest member of George Mallory’s expedition who attempted to reach the summit in 1924. The two British adventurers disappeared on their final approach. Mallory’s remains were found in 1999. Irvine’s family has volunteered to compare DNA test results to confirm his identity.
