# The Judicial Service Commission nominates three judges for the Supreme Court of Appeal

# The Judicial Service Commission has selected three candidates for recommendation to president Cyril Ramaphosa for the appointment to the Supreme Court of Appeal. They are KwaZulu-Natal High Court judge Piet Koen, Western Cape High Court judge Elizabeth Baartman, and Judge Phillip Coppin of the Gauteng High Court. Koen once presided over former president Jacob Zuma’s arms deal-related corruption trial. The JSC says this decision follows a thorough interview process of six candidates and deliberation among the commission members.
Meanwhile the African Transformation Movement says it stands resolute in support of a transformative and equitable judiciary. The Judicial Service Commission began interviewing 54 candidates for 21 vacancies at various high court divisions across the country yesterday. ATM’s spokesperson, Zama Ntshona, says it is imperative that the most qualified candidates who embody the principles of fairness, equality, and integrity before the law, are elected:
# Eskom in Gauteng has welcomed the arrest of four contractor employees, who were apprehended for facilitating the unlawful consumption of electricity without payment. It is alleged that a resort owner paid an amount of ten-thousand-rand directly into one of the employees’ bank accounts, who shared it among the individuals involved. Eskom’s provincial spokesperson, Amanda Qithi, says the contractors are facing charges of electricity theft and meter tampering:
# The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs warns that the ongoing military operations and displacement orders issued by the Israeli army in Lebanon, are driving new waves of displacement. As of the third of October, the International Organisation for Migration had recorded 541-thousand-527 internally displaced persons in Lebanon. Some 892 collective shelters have been identified, accommodating more than 163-thousand people. Meanwhile, 284-thousand-894 people have fled Lebanon since the 23rd of September.
# Soccer: Title-holders Al Ahly of Egypt will face Orlando Pirates of South Africa after both were placed in Group C in the CAF Champions League group-stage draw. Chabab Belouizdad of Algeria and Stade Abidjan of the Ivory Coast complete the group. Ahly and Pirates met in the 2013 Champions League final with the Egyptians winning 2-0 in Cairo after drawing 1-1 in Soweto. Semi-finalists in the last two editions, Mamelodi Sundowns, face Moroccan clubs Raja Casablanca and FAR Rabat and Maniema Union from the Democratic Republic of Congo in Group B.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-44-cents and the euro at 19-rand-17-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-85-cents and Bitcoin trades at 62-thousand-729-dollars-78-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-642-dollars-45-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 79-dollars-72-cents a barrel.
