# Water and Sanitation minister Pemmy Majodina has reiterated her commitment to ensuring that women’s emancipation remains one of the department’s key focus areas. She recently hosted a Water and Sanitation Women in Leadership Dialogue, to take stock of the strides made and the role women in leadership played in expanding basic services, especially water and sanitation. The ministry’s spokesperson, Cornelius Monama, says there is an ongoing need to ensure that women are equitably represented in the sector:
# The Auditor-General audit teams will be presenting audit outcome insights to various committees as part of the 2024 Parliamentary Budget Review and Recommendations Reports process. The process starts today until next Thursday. Auditor-General’s spokesperson, Harold Maloka, says the process enables accountability for public funds and assesses government progress in delivering services:
# The case against three suspects accused of stealing foreign currency from president Cyril Ramaphosa’s Phala Phala farm in Limpopo returns to the Modimolle Magistrate’s Court today. The matter was postponed in August, to allow for the disclosure of the docket and for an interpreter to be secured. Imanuwela David, who is the alleged mastermind behind the February 2020 theft, has been in custody since his arrest last year. He is charged alongside siblings Froliana Joseph, who was a domestic worker at the farm, and her brother, Ndilinasho Joseph.
# The United Nations secretary-general, António Guterres, says last year’s seventh of October large-scale terror attack by Hamas on Israel scarred souls. Around one-thousand-200 people, mostly Israeli civilians, were killed in the attack and more than 250 were taken hostage. In retaliation, Israel has killed nearly 42-thousand people in Gaza. Guterres says today is a day for the global community to repeat in the loudest voice its utter condemnation of the abhorrent acts of Hamas:
# Tennis: World number one Jannik Sinner came through a tough match to reach the last 16 of the Shanghai Masters. The Italian recovered from a set down to beat Argentina’s Tomas Martin Etcheverry 6-7, 6-4, 6-2, as he continues his bid to win his seventh title of the season. World number two Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz defeated wild card Wu Yibing of China, 7-6, 6-3. 2019 champion Daniil Medvedev of Russia rallied to a, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4, victory against Italy’s Matteo Arnaldi.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-46-cents and the euro at 19-rand-16-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-93-cents and Bitcoin trades at 63-thousand-626-dollars-78-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-647-dollars-42-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 77-dollars-75-cents a barrel.
