In this bulletin:
# The EFF says the illusion of a rainbow nation has failed
# Zelenskyy says Russia can only be forced into peace
# And, Cricket: England wins third ODI against Australia to keep the series alive
# The EFF says the illusion of a rainbow nation has failed, and South Africans live in a society that continues to marginalise the African majority, while white supremacist institutions and individuals operate with impunity. The party’s spokesperson, Leigh-Ann Mathys, says heritage is not in monuments or celebrations of cultural diversity alone, but it is in the blood, sweat, and sacrifices of those who fought for freedom. She says heritage is also in the ongoing struggle against white monopoly capital, corruption, and exploitation:
The Freedom Front Plus says the ANC’s government’s effort to dress a social construct for South Africa in a cloak of inclusivity failed to recognise heritage. The country commemorated Heritage Day yesterday under the theme, Celebrating the Lives of Our Heroes and Heroines Who Laid Down Their Lives for Our Freedom. FF Plus leader, Pieter Groenewald, says heritage should be about nation-building and social cohesion:
# ActionSA leader Herman Mashaba says they will not turn a blind eye to corruption in Tshwane, despite engaging in coalition talks with the ANC in the metro. The party recently withdrew from the DA-led multiparty government in Tshwane, saying it would either vote in support of an ANC-sponsored motion of no confidence against mayor Cilliers Brink or refrain from participating. Mashaba says he is aware of party supporters expressing disappointment with the move to engage with the ANC but has vowed that it will continue to hold the party accountable.
# Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy says the war with Russia cannot be calmed by talks alone, but that Moscow must be forced into peace. He addressed the United Nations Security Council, of which Russia is a permanent member. Zelenskyy accused Moscow of committing international crimes by targeting Ukrainian civilians and energy infrastructure. He also claimed that he had proof that Russian president Vladimir Putin is plotting to target three Ukrainian nuclear power plants to further degrade the country’s energy grid:
# Cricket: England defeated Australia by 46 runs via the Duckworth–Lewis–Stern method in the third ODI in Durham. Australia posted 304 for seven. In reply, captain Harry Brook who scored an unbeaten 110, shared a 156 third wicket partnership with Will Jacks. Rain arrived with England still needing 51 off 74 balls, but victory was confirmed as they were well ahead of the DLS par score of 208. The hosts can now level the five-match series at two-all in the fourth ODI at Lord’s on Friday.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-31-cents and the euro at 19-rand-39-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-23-cents and Bitcoin trades at 64-thousand-377-dollars-90-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-659-dollars-53-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 74-dollars-97-cents a barrel.
