# President Cyril Ramaphosa has urged South Africans to ensure women play a central role in shaping the country’s future. Speaking at Women’s Day celebrations in Tzaneen, Limpopo, Ramahosa said leadership at all levels, including cabinet, parliament, municipalities, companies, and state-owned entities, must have at least 50-percent women representation. Ramaphosa called for gender equality and praised women’s meaningful contributions in decision-making and nation-building, as well as contributing to the economy:
# Police in Mpumalanga are hunting ten suspects linked to the fatal shooting of Sergeant Lawrence Mtshweni, who was responding to a business robbery in Schoemansdal. Mtshweni later died in hospital. His killing follows Friday’s murders of two detectives in Roodepoort. SAPS is offering a 150-thousand-rand reward for information on Jabulani Moyo, an awaiting-trial suspect, as maximum resources have been deployed. The public is warned that Moyo is armed and dangerous.
# Deputy Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation Nomalungelo Gina urged African universities to become creators of artificial intelligence and innovation. Speaking at the University of Zululand’s 4th International Education Week, she stressed integrating indigenous knowledge into technology to protect local culture. She called on institutions to embrace global partnerships without losing African identity, highlighting the need for isiZulu AI content while stressing data sovereignty for Africa’s innovation future.
# Johannesburg mayor Dada Morero says the vacant Transport mayoral committee member seat belongs to residents, not the Patriotic Alliance. The PA seeks to appoint recently sworn-in, 24-year-old former DA member of Parliament, Liam Jacobs, and their 2026 Tshwane mayoral candidate, following Kenny Kunene’s resignation. Morero told eNCA no decision on replacement has been made, stressing the role must serve community interests:
# Thousands of protesters in support of hostages took to the streets of Jerusalem and marched towards prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s residence. They voiced their anger over his government’s plan to fully occupy Gaza City. A former soldier, Max Kresch, who marched, told the BBC he refused to continue to serve in Netanyahu’s political war. Protests took place across Israel in cities including Haifa and Tel Aviv. Israel’s decision to expand its war in Gaza sparked condemnation from the UN and many countries, including the UK, France, Australia, Turkey, Germany, Finland, and Canada.
# And golf: South Africa’s Richard Sterne, and overnight leader, struggled with a four-over 76, which saw him drop down the leaderboard to fourth place on the third day of the DP World Tour – Nexo Championship. Grant Forrest of Scotland took the lead with a one-under-par 71, bringing his total score to seven-under. He now has a three-shot advantage over England’s Jordan Smith, who posted a level-par 72. The windy conditions at Trump International Golf Links continued to challenge the field, leading to a difficult day of scoring for many of the players.
