# MK Party head of Presidency, Magasela Mzobe, says the immediate task of building and strengthening its structures is progressing well. Former president Jacob Zuma’s party stormed onto the political stage in the May general elections, winning just over 4.5-million votes to become the third-biggest party in the National Assembly. Speaking to the SABC, Mzobe says they had no luxury to build the party gradually following its performance in the elections:
# Parliament’s portfolio committee on Police says police need adequate plans to deal with extortion, including adequate intelligence-led operations that will lead to convictions of the alleged perpetrators. This week, the committee will receive a briefing on the police’s plans to fight the increasing scourge of extortion in the country. Committee chairperson, Ian Cameron, says it is unacceptable that small businesses, schools, and communities are subjected to additional and unlawful taxes that squeeze out the little resources they make.
# The Department of Labour conducted a blitz inspection at two restaurants, Ocean Basket and Babel, in Pretoria last night. The operation at the luxurious Babel restaurant followed a complaint about management allegedly exploiting workers including employees being mistreated and undocumented foreign nationals being employed. Gauteng Home Affairs head, Albert Matsaung, says several arrests were made, and some foreign nationals were found to be working without the relevant documentation:
# Rugby: All Blacks prop Fletcher Newell is set to miss both of this month’s Bledisloe Cup Tests against Australia because of a calf injury. He will definitely sit out Saturday’s match in Sydney, and will be reassessed ahead of the return fixture in Wellington on 28 September. New Zealand Rugby says the 24-year-old Newell suffered the injury late in their match against the Springboks in Cape Town, which South Africa won 18-12.
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-69-cents and the euro at 19-rand-64-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-28-cents and Bitcoin trades at 58-thousand-417-dollars-5-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-585-dollars-84-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 71-dollars-50-cents a barrel.
# And finally, the Japan-set samurai series Shogun and The Bear were the big winners at the 76th Emmy Awards held in Los Angeles. The Bear won five awards including Best Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for Jeremy Allen White. Shogun earned four Emmys, becoming the first ever non-English language series to win Best Drama, along with wins for lead actor, actress, and directing. Netflix’s Baby Reindeer also picked up four wins, including best limited or anthology series. The Daily Show won the Emmy for best talk series.
