Good morning. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# The EFF welcomes the revival of the nationalising the Reserve Bank
# The GOOD Party says the Zondo Commission’s evidence should be made public
# And 67.1-million people watched the Harris-Trump presidential debate
# The EFF has welcomed Parliament’s standing committee on Finance’s decision to revive the Private Member’s Bill and conduct public hearings. Leader Julius Malema introduced the bill, which aims to nationalise the South African Reserve Bank, in the sixth Parliament. However, it lapsed along with dozens of others that could not be processed before Parliament dissolved for the May elections. The EFF says the Reserve Bank will soon be nationalised, becoming a national resource serving the interests of the majority, rather than protecting the interests of a privileged few.
# The GOOD Party says evidence gathered by the Zondo Commission should not only be accessible to the National Prosecuting Authority; but should be placed in the public domain. This is as the NPA has accused the Justice Department of hindering its ability to access the commission’s evidence database. GOOD’s secretary-general, Brett Herron, says by making such evidence available to ordinary South Africans, the country would build sorely needed extra layers of accountability:
# The first presidential debate between US vice president Kamala Harris and former president Donald Trump drew an estimated 67.1-million viewers across 17 television networks on Tuesday evening. This is a 31-percent increase from the June debate between Trump and president Joe Biden, who has dropped out of the race. According to Nielsen data, the Harris/Trump debate was short of the record viewership for a presidential debate, when 84-million people saw Trump’s and Hillary Clinton’s first face-off in 2016.
# Cricket: Australia defeated England by 28 runs in the first T20 International in Southampton. Travis Head scored 59 from 23 balls and shared an 86-run opening stand with Matthew Short before Australia collapsed to 179 all out. Liam Livingstone took three wickets. In reply, England who handed T20 debuts to three players and were captained by Phil Salt for the first time, were bowled out for 151. Australia captain Mitchell Marsh was full of praise for Head:
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-89-cents and the euro at 19-rand-72-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-35-cents and Bitcoin trades at 58-thousand-404-dollars-48-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-516-dollars-5-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 71-dollars a barrel.
# And finally, South Africa’s Tyla won her first MTV Video Music Award for Best Afrobeats for her hit song Water, making history as the first female African artist to win a VMA. Taylor Swift, who had 12 nominations, won seven including Artist of the Year and Best Collaboration for Fortnight featuring Post Malone. She is now the most-awarded artist in VMA history. Tyla says the impact her song has had globally is a testament that African music can be pop music too:
