# Former president Thabo Mbeki says ANC members don’t need a dysfunctional party and members should work together and be intentional and deliberate. Mbeki was addressing the ANC Free State provincial executive committee renewal convocation in Welkom. He says the party must continue to intensified its renewal and also participate in the upcoming national dialogue:
# Six suspects were killed and another seriously wounded in a shootout with the police in Germiston on Saturday. Hawks spokesperson, Katlego Mogale says the police earlier received information that a cash-in-transit robbery were planned and a multidisciplinary task team ambushed the robbers. She says as the members approached the area they received word of an armed robbery and a request to look out for an Hyundai IX 35:
# The City of Tshwane says it supports collaboration efforts with the metro, provincial and national governments to strengthen law enforcement. Mayoral committee member for Community Safety, Grandi Theunissen says an agreement will be finalised soon and this will further solidify the city’s commitment to strengthening intergovernmental cooperation and addressing shared safety challenges:
# US health officials have confirmed a human case of bird flu in a patient that had no immediately known animal exposure. The patient, in the state of Missouri, was treated in hospital and has since recovered. It is the 14th human case of bird flu in the US in 2024 and the first without a known occupational exposure to infected animals. However, the Centre for Disease Control says the risk to the general public remains low. Bird flu is a viral disease that primarily affects birds and animals and human infections are rare.
And finally in tennis: Aryna Sabalenka won the US Open and her third Grand Slam crown with a thrilling victory of 7-5, 7-5,over a gallant Jessica Pegula in a rollercoaster final on Saturday in the Arthur Ashe stadium in New York. A capacity crowd of 23-thousand included sporting royalty such as Olympic 100 metre gold medallist Noah Lyles and former Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton watched on. The 26-year-old from Belarus clubbed 40 winners to become the first woman since Angelique Kerber in 2016 to capture both hardcourt majors in the same season.
