# The Freedom Front Plus says unemployment in South Africa will end in catastrophe if the ANC does not do away with its discriminatory legislation on race in the labour sector. The country’s unemployment rate increased from 32.9-percent in the first quarter of this year to 33.5-percent in the second quarter. The FF Plus’, Heloïse Denner, says they have been warning for decades that legislation on Black Economic Empowerment and Affirmative Action will destroy the economy and the labour sector:
Meanwhile, RISE Mzansi says South Africa’s unemployment rate is a ticking time bomb that needs to be addressed urgently. Some 8.4 million people are now unemployed in the country, and more than 76-percent of these people have been without a job for more than a year. RISE Mzansi’s spokesperson, Gugu Ndima, says stabilising and growing the economy and creating living wage-paying jobs is one of the most important responsibilities for the seventh administration:
# ActionSA Limpopo chairperson, Victor Mothemela, together with Member of Parliament, Malebo Kobe, will attend the VBS Mutual Bank pre-trial hearing in the High Court in Pretoria today. Over 2.2-billion-rand was looted from the now-defunct bank. The bank’s former chairperson, Tshifhiwa Matodzi, who is in prison entered into a plea agreement with the National Prosecuting Authority. Kobe says they have long asserted that corruption must be declared public enemy number one:
# Around 300-thousand resident doctors of government hospitals in India have embarked on a nationwide strike demanding better protection for health workers. This comes after a 31-year-old resident trainee doctor was raped and murdered in eastern West Bengal state. A suspect has been arrested. The Federation of Resident Doctors Association says it has called for an inquiry into doctors’ working conditions and an impartial investigation of this brutal murder case.
# Tennis: Eleventh-seed Taylor Fritz was knocked out in the first round of the Cincinnati Open. Twenty-three-year-old Brandon Nakashima of the US took down his compatriot Fritz, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6. Another American, Frances Tiafoe booked his spot in the second round after beating Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, 6-3, 7-6. In the women’s draw, American Ashlyn Krueger ousted Olympic silver medallist Donna Vekic of Croatia, 5-7, 7-6, 6-2, to advance to the second round. There were also wins for Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina and France’s Varvara Gracheva.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-12-cents and the euro at 19-rand-93-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-31-cents and Bitcoin trades at 61-thousand-137-dollars-2-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-461-dollars-1-cent a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 81-dollars-2-cents a barrel.
