# The Institute of Security Studies says new Police minister Senzo Mchunu’s experience in government stands him in good stead to provide evidence-based policy direction and rigorous oversight to the police service. The minister’s appointment comes amid rising crime levels, with the third-quarter crime statistics showing a total of seven-thousand-710 people were murdered in the country. The institute’s Gareth Newham says within six months minister Mchunu should issue a clear and bold National Policing Policy aimed at improving police performance.
# The Save South Africa Civic Movement has described the new cabinet as the worst in the history of democratic South Africa, saying it is clear the ANC succumbed to the DA’s pressure. The DA has secured 12 positions in the new cabinet under the government of national unity. The civic movement’s, Tebogo Mashilompane, says they question the misplacement of ministers including removing Ronald Lamola from the then Justice and Correctional Services ministry, and Aaron Motsoaledi from Home Affairs:
# ActionSA in Ekurhuleni says it is concerned about the emergence of new allegations against Metro Police Department’s director of Special Services Julius Mkhwanazi. He returned to work in October last year, after an investigation into him abusing his power and utilising metro vehicles for personal use was dropped. ActionSA’s, Siyanda Makhubo, says Mkhwanazi has now been accused of soliciting sex for jobs from female EMPD officers who want to move up the ranks:
# US president Joe Biden has condemned the Supreme Court’s decision which ruled that presidents are entitled to absolute immunity from prosecution for official acts taken while in office. The ruling could hamper the federal case against former president Donald Trump over his efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. Biden has described the decision as a broader pattern from the Supreme Court in undermining a wide range of long-established legal principles:
# Soccer: Portugal has progressed to the quarterfinals of the European Championships in Germany following a three-nil penalty shootout victory over Slovenia. A gruelling goalless draw in extra time saw captain Cristiano Ronaldo’s penalty saved in the 105th minute. However, he recovered and converted his effort in the shootout as goalkeeper Diogo Costa saved all three kicks he faced. Portugal will now play France in the quarterfinals in Hamburg on Friday. Today, Romania faces the Netherlands while Austria takes on Turkey.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-38-cents and the euro at 19-rand-73-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-23-cents and Bitcoin trades at 63-thousand-115-dollars-95-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-326-dollars-74-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 86-dollars-81-cents a barrel.
