# Sadtu’s national executive committee says the DA is treating the ANC as beggars in the government negotiations. General secretary Mugwena Maluleke says the DA must become the opposition and those who put the interests of the country first should continue negotiating. He adds the teachers’ union cannot tolerate being dictated to by the markets as the country has to be returned to its rightful owners:
# Eskom says with the arrival of colder weather and the consequent increase in electricity demand, it is addressing the recurring challenge of network overloading in certain regions. Eskom’s spokesperson, Daphne Mokwena, says this issue is largely attributed to illegal connections, vandalism, meter tampering, unauthorised network operations, theft of network equipment and the purchase of electricity from unlicensed vendors and sellers:
# A reformist candidate won the most votes in Friday’s first round of Iran’s presidential election. Masoud Pezeshkian and ultraconservative former nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili will face off in a runoff election this coming Friday. CNN reports the election saw the lowest voter turnout for a presidential election since the Islamic Republic was established in 1979. Out of 60-million eligible voters, 24-million cast their ballots, resulting in a 40-percent turnout. The snap election was held after Iranian president Ebrahim Raisi died in a helicopter crash last month.
# Rugby: South Africa wrapped up the opening day of the World Rugby Under20 Championship with a 57-7 win over Fiji in Cape Town Stadium. France opened the defence of their title with a 49-12 victory over tournament debutants Spain. England came from behind to beat Argentina 40-21 in the opening match at Athlone Stadium, before Australia outmuscled Georgia 35-11. Ireland overcame Italy 55-15 and New Zealand survived a late scare to beat Wales 41-34.
# And, we end with some more good news: Government’s sixth administration has achieved the country’s first primary budget surplus in 15 years. Acting government spokesperson Nomonde Mnukwa says the last budget surplus was before the 2008 global financial crisis. Mnukwa adds this commendable achievement was attained due to the support National Treasury received from president Cyril Ramaphosa, minister of Finance Enoch Godongwana and the cabinet despite many challenges that confronted the national fiscus:
