# Everest Wealth says the appointment of president Cyril Ramaphosa’s new cabinet is a significant test for the government of national unity. There is great anticipation about whether Ramaphosa will take bold steps to drive economic reform, with key appointments, especially in portfolios like finance. While the DA is expected to secure cabinet positions, policy differences among coalition partners remain a challenge. Everest Wealth CEO Thys van Zyl says the new cabinet’s composition will be critical in addressing pressing issues like inequality, poverty and unemployment, and restoring investor confidence.
In a related development MK Party’s 58 elected members will be sworn in on Tuesday, having missed the first National Assembly sitting on 14 June. Parliament confirms it has received notice from the party about supplementing its candidates’ list with 21 additional members. Speaker Thoko Didiza will administer the oath to members nominated after the first sitting. Parliament’s spokesperson Moloto Mothapo says travel and accommodation arrangements for the ceremony are being finalised:
# Gauteng police have seized over 18-thousand counterfeit items worth 15.5-rand million in Johannesburg’s CBD. The national counterfeit goods unit, with various partners, targeted a shopping mall at Rahima Moosa and Von Wielligh Streets. Police spokesperson Amanda van Wyk says the raid revealed hidden storage facilities containing shoes, sports apparel, handbags, caps, and perfumes. Van Wyk adds earlier operations this month brought the total seized counterfeit goods to nearly 28-million-rand over three weeks:
# Rugby: Glasgow Warriors produced a stunning come-from-behind victory to shock the Bulls 21-16 in a thrilling United Rugby Championship final at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria last night. Glasgow, coached by South African Franco Smith, trailed 13-7 at half-time, but an inspired second half performance saw them silence the Loftus faithful. For the Bulls there was a try by Marco van Staden, with a conversion and three penalties by Johan Goosen. Glasgow Warriors’ tries by Scott Cummings, George Turner and Huw Jones were all converted by George Horne.
# And, all health centres and hospitals in Bangladesh have been ordered to stock anti-venom after reports of a surge in snake bites across the country, especially by the Russell’s viper. The snake, which feeds on rodents, is often found near agricultural settlements. Scientists believe it has adapted to different climate conditions and has now spread to more than 25 districts in Bangladesh. About seven-thousand people die in Bangladesh every year from snake bites. The World Health Organisation says snakes bites are one of the most neglected tropical dangers and has made tackling them a priority.
