# Stage 6 load-shedding is in effect this morning until further notice, marking the first occurrence this year. Eskom has reported the return of two generating units to service but has taken two other units offline. The power utility cites the need to replenish pumped storage dams for the week ahead as a further reason for implementing stage 6. Eskom will announce any changes as soon as they occur.
# Equal Education has called on government to address school infrastructure backlogs. The organisation’s Mahfouz Raffee says this is in line with president Cyril Ramaphosa’s emphasis on education becoming a tool to create equality during his state of the nation address. Raffee told eNCA government has failed to deliver on its promises regarding this matter in the past:
# Metrorail in the Western Cape has voiced concern over the escalating incidents of cable theft, leading to critical rail routes being disrupted and leaving commuters stranded this week. Operations manager Raymond Maseko has told eNCA, despite cable replacements, thefts continue unabated, severely impacting rail infrastructure and operations:
# The minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Naledi Pandor, has revealed heightened security measures following alleged intimidation attempts by Israeli intelligence. This comes in the wake of the government’s decision to push for an Israeli trial for genocide at the International Court of Justice. Pandor expressed concern about her family’s safety, citing messages on social media referencing her children. Despite the personal toll, she asserted the government’s determination to pursue charges of genocide against Israel. Pandor has urged resilience against intimidation tactics.
# And finally, cricket: The second season of the SA20 is coming to a close today, when defending champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape faces Durban’s Super Giants in the final at a sold-out Newlands in Cape Town. Sunrisers ended on top of the log after the round-robin phase, and then defeated Durban in the first qualifier to advance directly to the final. Durban had to defeat Joburg Super Kings in the second qualifier to reach the title match. Newlands’ gates open at 2:30 this afternoon and the action starts at 5:30.
